Recently a Samba user contacted me regarding the difference between Sedan and Karmann built Convertible Beetle front floor heat door slides.. ya know the ole' ankle burners Laughing

For 1962 VW implemented front floor heat control doors to aid in floor air flow control and improved defrost operation. This addition was in conjunction with the first attempt at rear floor heat.. hence the poor flowing "62 heat system" pre fresh air heating

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=445797

A simple sliding door(s) located at the front floor outlets (left and right) which can be moved by sliding to restrict air flow to the front floor or block the flow completely to redirect to the windshield for defrosting or defogging.

There was one outside the Samba photo reference that I used a few times in other topics .. Not talking but.. as we have witnessed too many times.. the photo link is now dead..

This topic is merely photo documentation of the difference between the common 62-67 Steel Sedan door and the Alloy Cast door used for 62-67 (and 68 ) Convertibles.

Why Karmann chose to cast these from an alloy.. ?? ... Anxious I simply do not know. I have some thoughts as to why..
If anyone has the true answer and wants to contribute please fell free to.

The part numbers for the Convertible are
151 255 961
and
151 255 962

These photos will document the size and profile differences between Convertible and Sedan.
Just like sedans they are left to right specific.

Unless a person is doing a 'museum quality' restoration, it looks like either slider could be 'manipulated' to go into a sedan or a convertible ....a little (heat-assisted) flattening of the curve on the alloy slider ....or a little trimming on the steel one. Or (better solution) ...just fabricate replacements from some proper guage sheet metal. (one of my friends back ,in the day, had Budweiser sliders!)
