I am on the verge of introducing a new part for the 356. I will be offering a stainless steel version of the fan shroud volute - the velocity stack looking ring that goes on the fan inlet for increased air flow. I already make a venturi ring for the VW bugs, so offering this makes sense. I do powdercoating, so I would like to offer the ring in a gray color that matches the shroud. It is my understanding that all factory 356 came with gray fan shrouds and all the other tin was satin black. Is that correct? Is that gray satin finish, semi gloss or gloss finish? does it have a specific name? any chance anyone knows of a gray that matches that is available? an RAL offering would be ideal for me. _________________ Volkaholic |

356 fan shrouds came in gloss black, satin black, metallic silver, grey, and off white, depending on engine classification and year model. _________________ Jack Staggs

Jack is correct on all points there. The normal 60hp engines fan shrouds in the earlier 356 series were black and the 75 hp super engines were silver.
Stoddard sell a rattle can for the light grey ( gray ) fan housing. These cans supplied only to the States.

You should put your question into google and you will see how the engine tin paint is discussed in length even down to the correct factory finish.

well I was hoping it was not that complicated! - I find it interesting that only the shrouds are different colors, all the other tin is satin black. i have never seen or heard of the off white shrouds, what i really need is a year by year, model by model break down of the colors. does anyone know where i could find that? _________________ Volkaholic |

Well, since the volute is not visible once the engine is installed in the car, just plain stainless steel would be fine for most folks. It certainly would be for me. _________________ Jack Staggs

the volute first appeared around 1961-62, when the 36hp fan shroud was replaced by the 40hp stale air shroud on 356 engines. _________________ Thanks,

Actually, the volute was first used when the S90 engine was introduced. _________________ Jack Staggs
