I am building a Sterling Kit Car but do not really want to cut the tunnel to move the shifter. I am looking at an aftermarket one that would sit on the tunnel. Is there an adapter that connects to the transmission that moves the shifter rod out of the tunnel and allow it to run over the top. I could then build a center console that hides everything after that.

There shift boxed used in "sand rail" type vehicles that could be mounted on top of tunnel and there are adapters that raise the shift are of transaxle above tunnel, but could not find image to show what it is...

Two questions:
1. If the shift rod is above the tranny how do you plan on attaching it to the tranny?
2. You realize your shifter will be at about mid chest to shoulder height if you did this right?

Its a Bug to Bus trans adapter, but it might get the result that you are looking for with some modifications.

To make your desired set up work, you will have to install a bus transaxle or raise the bug transmission several inches above where its mounted. Either of those jobs is much more difficult than moving the shift lever aft a few inches. Raising the transmission would mean a whole new suspension design.

This is how to move the shifter back. Its no big deal.
