Fitted the rear corner panels. That was a pain.
I made a spacer for top that jammed over the lip. The panel holds it tight front and back and keeps the panel straight. Panel likes to bow slightly in the middle so may try gluing a stiffener to back at mid height.
Left panel assembled. I placed a plastic bag under the seam so I wouldn't glue to the "bench". Screwed a block to each end of the bench so the panel had a slight bow up. Positioned some plywood for backing so it would avoid the wall structure. After placing the clamps I pushed the panel flat forcing the seam together then tightened the clamps.

Very nice work! What kind of finish are you putting on the panels? Those ceiling panel drawing will come in handy for making the panels for my '60. I may even be able to use the rear corner panel drawings as well. _________________ Joey

Amber shellac. I tried a bunch of stains to make it look like old finish but all just looked fake. The amber shellac will age quickly and look natural.
I will finish both side of all panels and use plastic on the back of lower panels to prevent water damage. Shellac is not water proof but easily repaired. _________________ My 64 Kombi restoration

Your panels are looking good! Thank you for sharing the drawings. Although I wish you had made metric measurements.
I would use a waterproof lacquer instead. Birch tends to get black mold stains when it gets moist. Condensing moisture is enough to cause this to happen. |
Thanks. I will add metric dims to the imperial ones. Just a setting. I was thinking of doing that anyway.
Shellac should protect the wood from mold unless it is continualy wet. Plastic or waterproof backing should prevent that. I dont like how any of the lacquers look. Just too clear and I havent had luck with stains... _________________ My 64 Kombi restoration

I really hope Shellac will do the trick for you. It would be a real pity if the nice wood and your work is ruined by moisture.
My workbench sat in an open shed for a winter. The original varnish I used was wax based and did not hold up to the moisture which condensed on the wood when the weather changed from cold and dry to warmer and moister.
You can see the difference between the left side, the drawer fronts were added later and I used boat lacquer on them. The top right panel still has the original wax varnish on it and the door on the bottom right had the same problem as the panel above. But it was sanded down and lacquered with the boat lacquer. Unfortunately I was not able to get rid of the stains completely.
Now you can argue, that the would is thick and stays moist longer because it need time to acclimate to the temperature change. But, the sides are made of 6mm birch plywood and they have the same stains.
The waterproof lacquer really makes a difference. I don't have any experience with Shellac, except for what I remember from old valve radios. The shellac tends to crack when the wood gets moist and thus the finish get ruined and the wood is not protected any more. _________________ - Michael

Intricate beyond belief. Each piece of the bus is seamed? |

Finally got the drivers kick panel to fit. Apparently when I installed the vent tube I had it rotated just slightly so the panel doesn't lay perfect. Not really noticeable though.
Forgot I had some 3/4" fiberglass reinforced foam board so made my spacers out of it instead of plywood. It is very light and waterproof.
Glued a stiffener on the back of the rear corner panels. Hoping it makes them lay a little nicer.
Edit: Stiffener did not work out so I removed them.
