Webber carb on 1600 anybody running them?

Is the Webber too much carb for a stock(well worn) motor?
A buddy put one on his rail ,instead of listening to me and resetting his pict 30/.
He bought it non running.
I cleaned the carb and got the distributor freed up. Advance was sticking.
Needed to bump the pilot.
Instead he changed intake and carb to the single Webber. It's way rich now.
Is it a waste of time to reset the Webber?
I don't think the motor has enough vacuum to run right.with it. He thought it would be faster with it on.

It would help to know which Weber. Presuming it is the 32/36 I've read where a lot of guys, not just VW guys, complain about the carb "didn't work" for them. Usually upon further inquiry I've read that they just bolt it on and do nothing further. One thing about Webers is they are very adjustable (jetting for example), that is one of their features, and most applications need some level of adjustment. In my experience they are a very good carb, but not if the owner is lazy.

Other problem points I read about are; fuel pressure or the lack of a regulator, dinky air filters, or the wrong carb for their application / engine.

Give us more info, and we can give you an answer.

Weber made a lot of different carburetors, so without knowing which one, we can not give you accurate feedback.

Not enough vacuum you say? Do you mean he was running a hot cam with a lot of overlap? If so, those can be hard to make run right with a single carburetor with long intake runners, like the factory manifold, and really are best suited for dual carburetors.

If tuned (jetted) correctly 1600 will run something as big as dual Weber 40 IDF's.... Secret here is tuning... There is about probably 6-8 Idle jets, maybe 20-30 main jets, 11 emulsion tubes and maybe 15 air correction jets and several venturi sizes to chose from and some combinations work well some don't work at all..

Have to have specifics... Just "having a Weber" is like "how long is a piece of string"....

I will find out what it is
I'm saying it's well worn motor.
Compression is getting low
All I know is it's a 2bbl.
I think putting a bigger carb on a worn out motor is a waste..

Now he's wanting to pull the intake off and go back to the old carb.
