I went from 6v to 12v recently, I bought the 12v element from wolfsburg west for my solex 30-1. installed it in my bug a few days ago and everything was fine. drove about 5 miles over the last few days. today after driving about 15 min the car started idling high , check the carb and the choke plate was partly closed and the element cover was really hot . any idea why ?

The choke element is supposed to get hot.

As shown in the picture below, the choke is positioned by a coiled element like a clock spring -- as the element warms up, it expands and opens the choke butterfly in the upper carb body. To help speed up this process and to prevent the choke from possibly closing again after the engine has warmed, the choke element contains an electrical heating coil that is powered all the time when the ignition is switched on. You can partially see the heating element through the slot, next to the white insulator material.

Since your choke was partly closed well after the time that it should be fully open and the heating element is obviously working, that tells us that you need to adjust the position of your choke element so that it is fully open with the engine warm. Either that, or the choke is sticking in the carb body.
