Heres the icing on the cake!
Same bus that Doveblue3 posted, photos that I had taken years ago.
Doveblue may know better but I hadnt seen the bus around for several years before I moved out of St Pete in which this bus/owner worked at the SA just down the street from me at the time.
Pretty cool to see the connection, hopefully someone will have better current info to add.

Wow!! This is incredible! Thank you beaterbarndoor for the post. Does anyone have any more information about this bus. When were these pictures taken? This is the same bus as the plates match and everything else as well. Hopefully it's still out there. |

Since the bus made it past the early '90's when nobody wanted them, I'm guessing it's been indoors at the new owner's garage. Hope it shows up. That spare tire cover is pure Florida! It was typical halfass bodywork/paint back then but not a bad bus from a distance. Hard to imagine anything would happen to it short of sitting in a garage or yard as long as nothing serious like an accident happened. As far as I understood from other locals, the owner was a little odd or a-hole like. That’s just word on the street.
Hopefully it’s still around _________________ www.thebustransfer.com

Rollicking good question/observation. Does it drop down so you can see the emblem? Slide hammer attachment point? |

...somehow acts as a vent to lessen wind buffeting? I can't imaging that it is access to simply get to the mounting bolts on the spare tire bracket. If you needed to remove the tire to change a flat, you'd just remove the cover first...

I believe this one was turned in to the Salvation Army in Tampa and subsequently purchased by a guy that worked there, who would have owned it in this photo. This was mid-late 90's. I am fairly certain it was blue/white and was missing the interior. I don't know anything beyond that.

I remember taking that photo. The bus was blue and white.

He was one of those bus owners that didn't want to be bothered by other bus nuts. I remember putting fliers on his bus for DKB activities, and he never once showed up. _________________ DKB |

I'm not giving up, but the trail is getting cold. After I told my grandpa that I'm looking for his bus, he got extremely excited, I'd like to find it and show it to him. Any help is greatly appreciated
A few updates: The last time the bus was seen and photographed must have been some time in the late 1990s in Tampa, Florida. At the time it was supposedly missing the interior. It still had the white square mirrors and a spare tire and mount on the front.
I have done countless online searches, emails, and phone calls but no one seems to know what happened to the bus, it's like it dropped off the face of the earth.
Does anyone remember the name of the man that owned the bus when it was photographed? I've tried looking for it by looking for the front license plate but no luck there either.
My hope is that it is safe somewhere and didn't end up being scraped but right now my expectations are low, any help is truly appreciated.

Maybe check with some VW shops down there. Try Kip at Rare and Unique in Sarasota, FL.

You should also consider placing an ad that you want to buy it back. Facebook has a "Buy, Sell, Trade" page for most cities and towns in the US. Place a "WTB" post on the Tampa Facebook page (and later spread out from there to other cities/towns in FL) and maybe offer a $100 for anyone with information about the whereabouts of the missing bus. Here is a link:

I haven’t seen it at any local Tampa shows nor riding around the Tampa/ St Pete/ Clearwater area. There are not too many buses riding around in 2019 as local drivers because of the lovely weather that we have down here.
There are not too many shops left in Tampa that deal with ACVWs but Larry and April Olsen are your best bet as they have been in the local area for a while and whether the owner was cool or not it may have been through their shop.
There is a Tampa club forum post on this site maybe try there? Plus there is a local Tampa club Facebook site. You could try the Bulli Brigade team who had their show in this area for years. Failing that the DMV are mostly kind and responsive. Good luck! |

I am not sure what other outlets you've used to find it, but try Reddit. You didn't mention trying there either. Figure if the A-Hole who had in the 90's was between 18-50 he might have had children.
I hope this bus is a survivor and just underground. It's really neat you've gotten this far in your hunt. |

People looking for past buses, please private message me and I will do a search on both the past advertisements in TheSamba from EB and on my private extract of advertisements from 2016. In practice what I will return to you will be a list of possible advertisements matching the bus you are looking for. You might be able to then look at the "old" advertisements and see if the seller in these advertisements (or the thumbnail photo) might match what you are looking for.
Model and year information is most helpful along with any keywords like "Dorm" or "Dormy" would be here in this case.

As criminal as this sounds. Check out local Glamper-type groups too. There was a group that had a meet here in Boise a couple years ago- just a couple miles from my house on a Saturday. I just dropped in with my '65 camper and had two people approach me to say they had VW campers as well. These were folks I'd never seen in the local VW scene- just VW camper fans. _________________

For whatever it's worth, a red and white Dormo made it's way from Fla. to Colorado back in the early 90's. The kid was a weasel who brought it out. He put it up for sale and it just seemed like a shady deal so I passed on it. I saw the Bus downtown one night with the weasel getting shaken down by the cops. Apparently it was stolen. The Bus ended up in impound and friend of mine at the time bought it with intentions to restore. He ended up selling it to a guy in AZ from what I recall.
Not a lot of Dormo's out there. Good luck with your hunt. _________________ I've never met a Bus I didn't like.

There are probably more sub directories to check in. _________________ Prosit!
