Yes, for some reason Avon glass Volkswagens full of rancid aftershave must have been the popular white elephant gift of 1971, because an incredible number of these have survived, many still filled with the noxious fragrance of hairy '70s men. (Come to think of it, being a hairy man is back in fashion, so maybe "Windjammer" or "Tai Winds" will make a comeback).
You can still find these in most any self-respecting antique mall for under $10 (though there are always dealers who think they're made of jade).
I laughed at Everett's photos, because I've never seen an actual collection of these. Right on! It looks like all of 'em. I have just token examples in my collection.
It looks like whoever slapped on the stickers had issues figuring out which end was up.

I was checking out an antique store last year or so with my mom in Black Diamond Wa when I saw an nos in the box bus. I took it out, was all there and didnt even have the stickers on yet - but the strip was there to do so. Real neat and I almost bought it.
Then I realized the cap was leaking. The whole store stated to smell.

20-30 years ago an odd ball Beetle version was shown in one of the editorial columns of Hot VW's. If I remember correctly, it was from Mexico and was a white taxi. I think it also had a taxi light on the roof.

Avon put it in all kinds of vessels to promote collecting. Automobilia was only one type they used and they went ape shit on the different types of auto containers they made. VW only being one type.
This is the one I remember as a kid.

They are a first-tier VW collectible virus. My sister gave me my first Avon beetle soon after I got my first VW. I displayed it as a gift with pride from sis. Soon after, another family member wanted to add to my obviously enthusiastic collection! In no time, 5 of those things cursed my first apartment- much like rodents and blind hookers. They follow you like eyes on grandpa's portrait in the haunted house. I really don't believe these are ever purchased BY the collector- by rather- purchased only "for" the blessed nephew, grandson, etc.
And, like a Ouija board- you can't get rid of them. They're wrapped in a 1988 newspaper somewhere right now- waiting to once again unleash their foul Jai-Karate meets sweat, fish sauce and "Polo" by Ralph Lauren stench upon the basement.

This is all very true, however, I have to give them a small amount of collector cred, as they are unique, and not a copy of something else. If Avon had only made 1,000 of them, collectors would be chomping at the bit to get one.
Plus it is possible to drain the offensive aftershave and boil them out.
