I'd been watching a CL ad for a '77 sedan. It was covered in moss and had no wheels. The price dropped and I threw out a stupid low offer. Guy says "come get it". Turns out he was moving and it had to go ASAP. And he had put the wheels on.

Threw the tow bar and some tools in the truck, headed out and picked it up last weekend. Turns out it's a two-owner, solid, clean VW from California that was sitting for 10 years. The guys wife bought it from the original owner in the 90's. It came with a binder full of hand written records of the miles driven each year and a bunch of receipts.

It cleaned up pretty nicely, had to scrub lots of moss and algae from it. The inside is incredibly original, even has the OG radio.

Wow. Nice score. That looks real solid. Post more pictures during the cleanup.

NICE! Looks like a keeper and original piece for sure. The one thing I enjoy about the 77 standard is it was the last year VW brought them in the USA.

Yeah! This was it for the standard beetle in the USA. I like to think that it's the best of the beetle, all those progressive refinements over 40 years, and this is the result.

I hit the junk yard today because I got an alert from Row 52 that a beetle was fresh in the bone yard. Picked up an original plastic console, some knobs and trim and two of the sport wheel center caps.

Yeah! It does, and I plan to keep it that way. Noticed it has the old style Bosch double relay, the metal one. All the hoses have the correct style of hose clamps, but I know the hoses are brittle. Haven't put a battery into it yet, I'm going to wait until I can take a closer look at the wiring and fuel system.

Dang, what a steal!! No sunroof though. For some reason, I thought all the last Beetles had sunroofs.

Hey Whobba,

I also just got a 77! Just finally got it registered last week and I am currently working on insurance for it.

Super jealous of your front seats. Mine came cut down to low backs. Not cool. Been searching for some stock front seats near me. Found a few sets back East but shipping kills those deals.

Anyways, nice Bug man. That wash job really brought it back!

I will be following along!

Very cool! As others have said, 1977 is the last year they were sold here and they do have some unique features for a standard (intermittent wipers, adjustable headrests, etc). Not many were sold here. They were expensive compared to the competition at the time by a considerable amount, so only a little over 12,000 were sold (compared to over 342,000 just four years earlier). Nice to see it is still fuel injected. I would remove the headlight eyelids, get it mechanically perfect and detail the resto. That's just me of course, its your car. Enjoy it.

What a find Laughing Cool

Can I ask what a "stupid low offer" would be?
If you don't want to, I completely understand.

Thanks, Dude! I agree! I also detest the eyelids. I pulled one off, but the other one has a rusty screw so I have to wait until I can shoot some stuff on there and loosen the threads.

They started at $4,000, reduced it to $2,000 and I got it for $1,400. I didn't know if it was going to be worth it until I drove out there to pick it up. Only took a few minutes of looking at it to confirm. I really lucked out!

Yes, Oregon does have smog rules that apply to this car. It's a federal model, so it has no catalytic converter. I found a used muffler here on TS from thebugsmy59 (Mark Bolina) so I can get rid of the frankenmuffler that is on there now; a half muffler designed for a catalytic (California) beetle, with a pipe welded in where the catalyst would be. It doesn't fit right and it's hanging low and looks like garbage.
