Does anyone know a source of information for this? I need to find out what rear suspension options give the narrowest track width. I'm using a 71 swing axle chassis so that's my limitation. It's to enable me to calculate if my wheels will fit in a 356 coupe build.

Thanks

VW published track widths, wheel sizes, wheel base, turning radius, horsepower, weight, etc. in the owner's manual of each car. The technical section here on the Samba has scanned copies of those manuals for most years.

1971 swing axle?

Thanks Brian, Yes a J reg (UK) which is Aug 70 to July 71.

Had a look, but the Owners manuals you mention only give a basic spec, ie track width, but not lengths of axles themselves...?

So, ideally you would be looking for the drum face to drum face distance of a stock IRS rear. From there, you will likely need to modify things if you need it narrower.

I may have that number written down in the shop. I'll be back.

Sorry, I don't have it. I have split bus, early bay, and late swingaxle beetle, but not an early IRS beetle. I did have a "track width" at 60 3/4", but I think that is to the outside of the rear tires, stock wheel/tires, with engine in.
