Got it painted finally. I am new to this and it did not go perfect as I got a couple runs in the clear coat and it may have not been applied perfect but overall it looks alright. What do you guys think?

Gotta love the smell of fresh paint in the morning! mmm so shinny and smooth. It looks nice from the computer screen, but hard to tell quality without being there in person. Just enjoy that it is painted and isn't about to rust through this year at least lol _________________ Brutis Patches Izabich: 1970 VW Transporter - 1776cc DP

Got the doors painted!
Now I’m putting everything away as I am leaving for college in a couple days, I’ll be back during winter break to hopefully make a lot of progress.

Finished my first semester at K-State and have been putting in some work on George.
Got the Engine put together, just finished painting all of the engine tins but I don’t any pictures of that yet.
Had my girlfriend help me roll on some sound deadener.
Got the dash, windshield wipers, shifter, parking brake, pedals, new wiring harness from WW and some trim and bumpers on.
Just about finished up rebuilding the fuel injection wiring harness myself. Waiting for some loom tape to come in and then it’ll be done.
Old
New
Looking to get the engine in here in a week or so and hopefully have it running! |

So rad! Impressive work you're putting in here, maybe a bit excessive on the sound deadener, though _________________ 68 panel

Awesome job so far. I used the same sound deadner from amazon and it has worked great so far. You did a killer job on the engines appearance by the way. Thanks for sharing. _________________ 1982 Vanagon Westy

Did you get this bus out of Arkansas? I almost bought on just like this in September of 2017, it had a solar system and whatnot on it. The guy called it the survival bus _________________ Vw For Life!! 1972 T2 Custom Deluxe/ Westfalia Weekender Conversion

Believe it or not, I didn't die and this project is moving along once again. Just finished my freshman year of Mechanical Engineering at K-State. I have quite a bit to update on so this will be a long post.

This was the "survival bus" out of arkansas. Not quite the same bus anymore though!
First thing I did was finish installing the new wiring harness I got from wolfsburg west. It was very nice and the booklet that it came with had some very handy wiring diagrams that I have not seen anywhere else.
Also got the engine installed and broke in the cam. So far so good with the engine. I had a new temp sensor be intermittently bad which caused a little bit of grief but after posting about it on here and re checking a couple times it depended on how the wire was bent if it open circuited or showed the correct resistance. I think I am going to wire up 2 gauges for this bus. I am going to have an AFR gauge and a dakota digital cylinder head temp gauge. I have read about people wiring in a potentiometer in the temp sensor circuit so they can richen the fuel mixture slightly on the go. I am considering doing that. Any thoughts?
Then put all new hoses and everything on the windshield washer system and then figured out that the valve in the steering column has a slow leak and is NLA so unless anyone has a source for mechanical valves or a way to repair it I will be converting to an in line electrical pump.
Started on the interior in the front. I will be reupholstering the seats later but for now they are going in. My dog seemed to think the seat was a good place to nap while I was cleaning up the seat rails.
Also wired in the amp for the radio system under the drivers seat. I am going to have 4 6x9 speakers and the amp is a rockford fosgate 400 watt 4 channel amp.
Re-stained some of the trim pieces. Ended up with a mixture of 4 different stains that we thought got us close to the original color. Also you can see the XPS insulation I used against the wall along with the vapor barrier.
Made new insulation for above the engine by using denim insulation and drop plastic with a sealer. I think the denim insulation was very similar to what was used originally.
Also made new hardboard to hold the insulation up. Even had both of the parents helping me with that!
Started installing the cabinets and also made a new front board for the rear seat. ( PO had cut some holes in the other one) I got rid of the door because I figured I could always lift the seat to access whatever was in there. Also mounted two of the 6x9's there.
Lastly I did a test paint to one of the hubcaps. They were sanded and painted from the PO so I figured i'd have some fun painting them. I thought the white with yellow VW looked pretty good.

Glad to see you are using your summer break well! I'm taking 15 hours of grad school this summer, so I don't get much Bus time until mid-July, unfortunately.
I don't remember if I told you before or not, but the guy who gave me my '78 Westy was actually a Mechanical Engineering professor at K-State! Original owners of the Bus owned one of the pharmacys in town. _________________ Dave Cook
