I really like this resuscitated thread. Very cool to see the bus come back to life.

Like the paint.
Like the camping pics.

Beyond just 'cool' in my opinion.

While I did not rescue this bus for praise from the VW community, I do appreciate the positive comments/vibes from you all. Thanks for the kind words.

My son and I will enjoy many years of camping in this old fashioned condo on wheels!

A few recent pics of The Hatch. Sporting a freshly built zero mile 1776 from SAB Imports in Riverside CA. New freeway flyer trans will be installed in the next few weeks...

My son (turbo_jr) and I have built some interior pieces (jump seat) and installed paneling (ceiling was done by Barry Stroute from Anaheim).

It's a proper camper now, has had some fun times at BBB and even on a good long trip up to Twin Lakes CA.

Says it all. And your son got a lot more out of it watching you sweat through the planning and execution of your bus, too.

Bravo Zulu.

Nice work! Even better that you are getting out there and using it!

I've had some exciting encounters with bears at Twin Lakes & our (Vanagon) Westy. What a great spot!

Nice! Thanks for the update. Will you and "The Hatch" be attending Pyro's Birthday bash in Havasu in January?

As usual! Have not missed it since The Hatch was reborn...my son, who is now almost 20 will be there (he is at the University of Utah) also.

Have you considered simply starting with a nicer bus? I don't know what your skills are, but the race is easier if you can see the finish line. If you are not a runner, don't start off doing a marathon.

Nice. I often forget what a journey it has been. So worth it.

So, another update, if you read through this entire thread, that started almost 2 decades ago, you would see some pictures of my son...he was a toddler just out of diapers when I drug this bus home from the desert, he went through years of calling it "his bus" and even did some work on it over the years with me. He is graduating from the University of Utah in May, his graduation present is the red and white 1966 SO-42 Tin Top in this picture. He likes to say he was born and raised in a bus, it's almost true. I have a wonderful young man as a son, and a partner to share my VW addiction and my old age with camping, fishing, hiking and driving an old VW bus with my boy. How lucky can a guy get?

Truly awesome. Buses are all about fun, and you have certainly done well having fun with your bus. Definitely worth saving.

The man between the two buses is your son? I remember when you were a punk kid getting free movies from over the drive-in fence.
