Hello, I just bought a 1971 beetle and noticed significant rot on the frame head piller. Is this a big job to replace, or can the old removed and a new frame head bolted on?

BIG JOB!!!!!
Plus it has to be welded on, really well and in perfect alignment! If it is off in any direction, you will be fighting when you try aligning it. _________________ Jimbo

It’s a Super Beetle. I had the same problem on my 73 Super and fixed it during a body off restoration. You separate the body from the pan and replace as much of the frame head bottom plate as you need. If you replace only the rear lateral extensions on the bottom plate, then you won’t have an alignment problem. While the body is off, you probably will need to replace part of the front firewall panel and patch the lower rear corners of the front quarter panels. It’s hard to see how much rot is in those corners or elsewhere until you have it apart. _________________ 1973 green Super Beetle |
