71 bus. I’ve pulled dozens of bus motors but always 72-79. I’ve never done an early bay till now. Needless to say, I forgot to support the transmission when I was pulling the motor yesterday. The transmission was about 3” off the ground when I realized it and jacked it back up. Do you think I damaged anything on the front of the transmission? Thanks! |

Transmission mount, remove and evaluate
Hockey stick shift linkage. Usually bends and needs replacement when you do this. Don't sweat it, easy replacement, parts available. _________________ .ssS! |

The angle did not look good when I realized my newbie mistake. I plan to replace all the shift rod bushings anyway so it’s all coming out and I’ll inspect. |

As much as everyone criticizes the Muir book, that’s where I learned to make a dirt cheap tranny support out of a 2x4 and some chain. It takes less than a minute to install and has saved me I don’t know how much money and aggro.... Sincerely hope it turns out well for you busmania! _________________ If you haven't bled on them, you haven't worked on them.

While you are looking at the hockey stick have a really close look at the shift selector bracket, most are cracking and ready to break anyways, a drop event often accelerates the process.
It's never going to be easier to get at than now, do the hockey stick bushings too. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

When I was young and dumb I did this to my 1971 bus more than once. The most damage I ever caused was bending the shift coupler cage. I suppose all these scary suggestions could happen but in my experience it didn’t. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

I figured I was the first to ever pull this Home head move. (I see sarcasm meter)
Thanks everyone. Cleaning up and resealing the engine then I’ll check out the tranny and clean it up. |
