Today in my wandering, I found this old school in Union Hope NC on hwy 97.
Look at the size of the trunk of that spruce tree.
Further down 97, I became intrigued by this graveyard in the middle of the nothingness of plowed under fields.
Here is the dominant, yet ostentatious monolith of the otherwise simple family cemetery.
Then there were all the simple small markers which usually indicate young children.
Then there were the remains of an older headstone.
Which I presume was replaced by this newer marker commemorating a confederate soldier. Company D 47th were also known as the “Castalia Invincibles” from nearby Castalia NC.

Today in my adventures I found several interesting houses starting with this one on 401n that is due to be leveled to make way for road widening.
This one has been abandoned for at least 25 years but at one point, there were dozens of 40s & 50s cars & trucks tucked beneath the sheds.
And one of it’s barns.
Then there was this gorgeous old plantation home outside of Louisburg that was saved & renovated about 15 years ago.

My next stop was in Louisburg NC (Which was home to the last hanging in NC.). What was once an extremely wealthy town, is now a collection of run down mansions & empty lots where others once stood.
However, quite a few have been preserved like this one...
Person Place (but no Thing.).

It's great that these houses are being saved, but I bet it costs a fortune to renovate them. There are many large mansions in a nearby city that are falling in shambles. Sad to see. Beautiful architecture. Between the cost to save & maintain them, and the riff raff that has taken over the city, few will see their glory again. |

Thanks again for the pictures of those lovely old houses. Yes it is a shame to see them go. The new ones just do not have the same personality in my view.
You obviously live in the banana belt TDCTDI! We are feeding the fire and drinking hot beverages here not out taking pictures of the scenery! |

We had a weird weather phenomenon roll in, it was 45* at 4:30pm & we'll be at 61* by 10pm. This caused a thick fog, what better reason to go out & take some pics.
While I was getting pics of this second house, this horse decided to check out what was going on.
Black & white makes it so much spookier.

Hear any chainsaws or see any hockey masks laying around?
Pics remind me of one of the first horror movies I saw as a kid, "The Fog". I still remember jumping out of my skin when the guy jumped out of the lake to grab the person sitting in the canoe. |

It has been between -30 and -40 every morning here now for 2 weeks and the forecast is the same for the next 6 days.
I could very easily be talked into haunting one of those old houses, fog and all! |

I'm surprised the old pump is still there, with the filler nozzle no less. Usually that stuff gets nicked pretty quick. |

Awesome house. |
I went back by it today since I couldn’t remember it’s name, it is now used as a B&B/events type establishment. It’s the “Timberlake House” built in 1803.

I had taken these last weekend but I forgot to add them.
First, there was this house outside of Louisburg.
This factory in Franklinton, that had been closed for 30+ years, is now being converted to apartments.
And finally, there was this house in Youngsville that has fascinated me for decades.

Damn I love this thread! There's just something about these abandoned homes that gets me. I wonder about who lived in these homes. The families that were raised there. The kids playing on those big porches. Why they simply left the home/homestead vs. selling it?
It would be really cool to know the background on some of these abandoned homes. How long have the been empty. Who were the previous owners? _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Yesterday, I searched yet another long forgotten, lonesome, rural road & found several gas stations/general stores of yore off highway 96 near Selma.

These two places are creepy as hell. A perfect setting for a B rate horror movie for sure.
Cool pictures! |

I think a big wrap around front porch looks so neat on a house.
Are there any "normal" houses down there that people actually live in? |
