"I have to disagree with 67 as there are no reverse lights in any of the pictures but I would guess between 64 and 66"
I initially thought the same, but looked it up and reminded myself that reverse lights were introduced midway through '67... _________________ 1963 Type II Kombi

The back hatch wider than the engine lid indicates 64-67
The paddle door handle for the front door indicates mid 66 model year through 67
You can't see the hatch or engine lid latches, which would narrow the production date down.
I can't see a chrome cover for the gas door latch. That may be because of the focus, or because it is not there. If it has the chrome cover, it would be 66 or earlier. Without, it is 67.
Reverse lights were standard for N American spec buses as of part way through the 67 model years. I believe they were still an option in euro spec buses, even early bays might not have them.
So, lack of reverse lights means nothing.
66 buses also have pointed bumpers. _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

Yes or a front spoiler as we like to call it...
It was probl made by my dad, and maybe the rear scoop too, altough you could buy scoop like these years ago..
I may have seen something like that in a Street Machine (UK mag) or HOT ROD as both had plenty of vw ads and articles...
My dad also made the front spoiler on his next car a Beetle..

Can't be a 67 it has slash front and rear bumpers.............
As posted earlier 66 and 67 had pointed bumpers. even some 65's came factory with a pointed rear and a slash front. In the before windows cut in pic It looks to have the gas flap lock so I guess it's a 66. |

Im gonna say the bus is a 66, as I can see what appears to be an indent under the rear hatch to assist in opening. This went away on 67 models when they got a finger tab latch. Also, regarding the reverse light comment, being that its a euro spec model, it wouldnt have reverse lights even if it was a 67.
Clearly we can see in that one pic that the bus was originally a panel. Its not the Angola spec 9 window like the red and white one pictured. The bus in question was not a factory window bus. It was a panel that was hacked. Simple. And again, its a 66. _________________ Jahnai Pearson - VW Restoration Technician

Cool old pics of your family's bus.
In fact, a factory nine window bus is very rare. Here is one, originally exported to Angola:

That was not a worldwide feature. I've come across '67s without, with - and with two (one per side).
As an addendum, dubstar, I have an early '67 ambulance (OCT '66). It has a reverse light. I'm not sure whether it was an ambulance feature or not though. _________________ the3rdrock.com - …musings, discoveries and postulating, by a restless itinerant in search of enlightenment.

Sorry to drag up such an old thread.
Is there any more info on a nine window split bus?
I'm being asked about a RHD one that has all the hallmarks of a 1962 Split Screen but has only two windows each side behind the front doors. Obviously two are in doors (left side) that could easily have been changed but without personal inspection the other two look 'factory'.
Australian or South African (Brazilian) perhaps? _________________ Rod,

Reverse lights were only made standard as of mid 1967 model year.
Dad had a 1963 non-sunroof deluxe that he always regretted letting it go to the scrapper back in the late 1970s. Had traveled across the USA from Seattle to S. coast of Texas so many times in that old bus.... _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Some firetrucks had extra windows in the back. Usually where the third window on a kombi would be. These were not hacks.
I have also heard, that VW offered panels for retrofitting single windows. Unfortunately I was not able to find them in my parts list.
The retrofitted windows on the bus in this thread were just cut in to the panels and not recessed like the factory style windows. This was a common thing done back in the days. _________________ - Michael

Hacking the windows was very popular specially in Finland in the sixties, as with the high tax on the passenger cars, you could import a van without the tax and add more seating after two years of use. Every seat row had to have window on each side as a emergency exit. Hack jobs on vans were made professionally even by the VW dealers at the time.
And for the reverse lights, they were only on US spec cars and ambulances. European '67 only had them with an option. Just like Clara has stated above. |
