Actually its a 3.875:1

I don't remember all the different versions but when I sourced the one in my Berg 5 I got a Klinkenberg.

The stock 1st gear in the SSC, late model, tranny was a 3.78:1. These were used in BOTH Standard and Supper Beetle.

They also charge more for a 3.75(3.8Cool r/p.

Basically a late model SSC is a vert strong tranny as built from the factory.

They are not all the same. Get an original VW one.

Super Beetle main shafts refer to the later model main shaft that was stronger and is sough after by drag racers.

The 3.88 R&P were used it late model IRS transaxles, they were never used in swingaxles . Yes, the 3.88 used in Standard Beetle, Super Beetle, and Karmann Ghia's are all the same. Yes you can build a swingaxle using a 3.88 R&P gear.

'71-'72 "Super Beetles" used the weaker 3.80 1st gear keyed mainshaft.

'73 & later "Super Beetles" used the stronger 3.78 1st gear splined mainshaft. The 3.78 was also used in Standard Beetle, Ghia, Thing, Type II and Type III

There is Klinkenburg, Gleason, Chineese, Brazillion, and Weddle to name a few. They are all not the same!!! The strongest German one is the Gleason. Odd because in the 4.12 and 4.37 the K is stronger, but the G 3.88 is stronger. The stoutest 3.88 made is weddle. Also there is no such thing as a super beetle tranny, they are the same regardless of super or not.

Trying to figure out some 4th gear RPM combos.

If i can start out by asking if anyone would know what the RPMS @70s MPH would be with;

3.88rp with 1.04 4thgear=?
And
4.12rp with .89 4thgear=?

Thx in advance....

http://www.teammfactory.com/calculator/205/60/15/2...3600/1/0/2

The MFactory gear calculator is really easy to use- just click on any box and change the numbers within. For a list of aftermarket gears available-
https://weddleindustries.com/tech-info
go down the list and click on the pdf for "A Current List of Weddle Gear Ratios in Stock". Note that if you make the spacing between any gears longer, look at what it does to the 'recovery rpm' (shift point).

As usual, just my 2 1/2 cents. Al
