How interchangeable are ignition parts on VW’s? Specifically Air Cooled and early water cooled. Besides that some parts will not physically fit, if you can get it to fit, and run, can bad things occur? Condensers and coils can be made to fit anything for example. Not that I plan on putting incorrect parts on a good car, but for just learning how it all works, and messing around with junk engines/cars, just to get running. Coils, condensers, points, rotors, caps, plugs, and plug wires, are what we are discussing.

Pretty much, if it fits, run it.
Exception might be mixing of resistor plugs, wires, connectors, rotors... it might add up to too much to fire well.

What do resistance parts do? That’s something I’ve never looked into.

They reduce radio static.

Speaking of making things fit where they haven't been designed to fit, I've had shit luck with replacement condensers and have adapted a printed circuit board-type capacitor to the do the job.

It required a little ingenuity to hook up and mount but it's working fantastically.
