|

After a 15 year absence from my prior Vanagon ownership, I just bought an 87 Westfalia with a Bostig conversion engine. I never could make a lot of sense with the original engine (unlike the 69 Bug I had in college). With the Bostig conversion, are the fuel pump and water pump still VW or are they something particular to the Ford engine? I wanted to buy some spare parts and wasn't sure. Thank you. Tom |

Welcome back to Vanagons.
The fuel pump in a Bostig conversion should be the same OEM VW fuel pump--on the passenger side rail under the van, aft of the fuel tank.
The water pump in a Bostig conversion is integral to the engine--a belt driven component--and is not a VW item.
In my experience, buy the best water pump you can afford. The cheaper pumps are not worth it. Look for Motorcraft parts.
I hope this helps.

Thanks so much. To get the water pump, would I just tell the parts store that I want a pump for a Ford Zetac engine? I'm not sure of its year. Thanks again. |

There should be an engine code on your zetec engine stamped into the intake manifold runner, you will want a flashlight to locate it. Basically when buying parts for a Bostig Zetec (e.g. when looking on a website that is asking for the engine identification) you should be safe to identify it as a 2002 Ford Zetec DOHC (Dual Over Head Cam). Some places will want the manifold ID as well, for a Bostig conversion the manifold ID will be either 988F or a WS4E.
I don't believe (but don't take my word as gospel/please verify this) that there will be any difference between the 988F and the WS4E in terms of basic parts like the water pump or other peripherals like alternator etc.
Last but not least, get over to Bostig.com and register there so you can see the support documentation... this is extremely helpful and will answer a lot of your questions. Keep in mind that some of the most relevant stuff for you (e.g. what kind of engine is this and how do I identify it) is at the back of the install manual, you can skip by 90% of the content since it is a step by step for dressing and installing the conversion. _________________ Grant

Lots of good info is also available at the Bostig fb page (Bostig Powered Vanagons) if you tolerate the fb UI.

As Kourt suggests, Motorcraft replacement parts seem to work better than the less expensive alternatives, esp. on the spinny parts like water pump, tensioner and idler pulley.
Also, you may want to sort out which edition Bostig you have. There were years of iterations before getting to the RGxx series.
The beauty of Bostig is that nearly every release incorporated improvements. Some minor, some significant. Although this means knowing which version you have because the answers for a question may be different.
Engine cradle, air box location, ECM, exhaust manifold, etc. each saw significant changes over time.
Did you get a programmer with your van? You may eventually need one.

I’m at 20+ years of Vanagon ownership and I love how well the Bostig suits the Vanagon in terms of simplicity and driving quality.
Enjoy! _________________ - Jim
