Ok, it's time to admit I'm an old fart. I know prices go up over time, but sometimes it just hits a little more starkly.
There were a couple of accessories that you could by at the drug store, they were so common. Certainly the old Checker or Pep Boys or other FLAPS had them almost as cheap. Usually kinda cheap construction, but they worked if you were careful.
This one went for about $2.49 back on the '70s:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=2206042
And these were maybe $10, less if on clearance:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1992969
I'm not necessarily calling the sellers out as being overpriced for today (ok, maybe a little...), but I'm just amazed how much the simplest, generic parts can go for today! Someone will likely pay these prices. It only takes one. |

I don’t completely disagree with you, but for comparison sakes, minimum wage was what? Maybe $1.50 in the 70’s when these were sold? Now depending on where you live it’s maybe $11 or $12? So about an increase of around 10x. Just like the pricing of those parts. (Ok I realize the math is a bit off, but you get the point). Plus since you can’t exactly go buy those retro parts new anymore, that commands a bit of a premium maybe.
I’m not saying I would spend the money on those parts, but I’ll admit I’ve spend more $ on lesser parts in my life.
Just putting it into perspective a bit. You Used to be able to get 2 Cokes for a nickel. Times are a-changin’!
You’re only an old fart if you start yelling at the kids to get the hell off your lawn. |

I worked for an aftermarket goodies shop (franchise) headed by 3M called Auto Trim Design back in the early 90s. We sold Covercraft custom UV shields for $49 and PIAA projector fog lights for $349. Now, the same shields retail for $49 and PIAA doesn't offer a pair of projector fogs (now LED) over $349. Not all hope in the aftermarket is lost
Incidentally, I worked there for $5.50/hr. plus occasional sales bonuses. _________________

New Bosch 010 distributor for $23.95 in 1972. I sold a NOS one for $700 this year.
It's all about supply and demand. I had a seller ask about a restored on and told him I didn't have one, but had a NOS one i'd be willing to sell. He grabbed it and was happy. Maybe I should of asked more for it.

The type three parts are in the column that is pricey. I am still suffering the sticker shock of the cost of items for the type 3 vs type 1. Oh well. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

I'm a little late jumping in here....looks like these European sellers are trying to get in on the tariff gravy train! _________________ '65 Sunroof Bug |

How about non accessories such as dealer fitted license plate frames. Dealers put them on all cars free of charge. Now they sell for $50+ depending on condition and dealer name. _________________ 1947 Typ 11a

Agree these are often crazy overpriced.
In my opinion there are hundreds that have almost no demand but sellers ask stupid money anyway because they see others for high prices.
Plus there are a few people that have massively hoarded them and then ask big money for them. This creates a cycle of other people asking high prices too.
Of course, this happens with other things too. _________________ How to Post Photos
