AW's and Riv's as well as most aftermarket conversions would likely have them since (as you state) they started life as an off the lot bus that was in stock when the converter needed inventory. Since commercials were taxed heavily VW made the dealers buy X% of them before they could buy more popular models, a dealer would likely cut a converter a deal on deluxes on a volume buy if they bought some of their mandatory floorplan commercials as well.
As Colin says the buses sent to Westfalia were the most bare bones stripper models ever since they were about to undergo that metamorphosis into their hottest selling and best earning model and those potential customers were far too distracted to notice the missing bits. Some may have even been a little charmed by the rustic industrial ambiance and considered it a bonus towards their journey into the vannin' life. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

That rear one is on my watch list… Anyone have a spare floating around?

Those rear slider handles on the westies to close the door look practical. Do those ever pop up in swaps or in the classifieds ever? I am now considering one.
Do those rear covers ever show up either? I agree that the door looks much more finished with that on. I've just got a lowly Kombi with AC... _________________ Few will understand the passion and majesty, among the nuts and grease.

Trim pieces on my 70 deluxe. Sounds like I'm lucky to still have them after all these years. _________________ 1970 Bus |
