|
|
Hi, anyone with a early and late 60s Beetle that can tell me the size of
the rear window. I know the rear window got bigger mid 60s.
Want to know height and width of glass and width of body opening.
Want to know which is closest in size to a late Porsche 356C rear window.

Bentley states for 66-67-68 Rear window...
"The rectangular rear window, which is 35.4 inches (900mm) wide and 15.6 inches (359mm) high and installed at an angle of 53 degrees". |

For 58-60, Bentley states 31.9 inches wide (810mm) and 14.2” (360mm) high for the glass.
I can’t give body measurements, as the glass is all in, and I can’t find a reference in the shop manual. _________________ Plate of shrimp |

15.6” = 396mm
Somebody (mr. Viiking!) bolluxed the inch to mm conversion!! _________________ Plate of shrimp |

Or was it the mm to inch conversion? How do we know which is right? |

Thanks for the pick-up. This just highlights the stupidity of having two measurement systems and the archaic nature of the non-metric system (Sorry US people). The error is within the Bentley/VWoA!!
My statement was correct. I wrote verbatim from the book! Section 9, Page 4. I've added this photo as a corrigendum in the gallery.
I have since physically measured a glass and it is indeed close enough to 400mm so 396mm is correct I believe. But others might like to make their own measurements as my vehicle is a Euro import here to Australia. I wouldn't think there should be a difference but Australia sometimes had differences in year model vehicles due to local manufacture versus Import versus the US.
Edit: I believe the "height measurement" is a vertical height not the curved length of the glass. My measurement was the curved length of the glass hence the discrepancy between my measurement and 396mm.
Edit 2: 395/25.4 = 15.59" = 15.6". I think the error is likely that it should have been 395 not 359. Someone was dyslexic on the day.

I’ll give the Bentley guy an inch; he was probably underpaid and over stressed, working against an impossible deadline for the blood sucking publisher.
To the rest, I give no more than a mm. _________________ Plate of shrimp |

What you should have said was....
I’ll give the Bentley guy 25.4mm; he was probably underpaid and over stressed, working against an impossible deadline for the blood sucking publisher.
To the rest, I give no more than three sixty-fourths. |
