Here we are setting the height of the Moon tank support. The check is to make sure the tank is below the height of the front hood. |

The checking is on my '61 Notch which is the same as the Squareback in terms of the inner wings. |

The photos show the billet hubs. These allow the use of the Porsche calipers and the empi 8 spokes. The tolerance was very fine to take the bolts for the 8 spokes. It also shows the inner wings heated and hammered back approx 1"".
The calipers were refurbished and painted with vht paint. The Porsche lettering was then painted on rather than using just a transfer. |

What a job.
Some of the EMPI parts I collected say 25 years ago. Nobody wanted them then but I just loved them. When I came to restore the car say 20 years later the prices were crazy. I looked every day and suddenly saw these nos Empi seats on ebay. It was just after Christmas when everyone had no money. I bid and won them. They came with the original seat pads which are perfect.
Problem was how to fix the critters. If you just put them on basic rails they hit the roof. Amazingly my friend had a every early Range Rover two door. It had a special seat mechanism which tilted, then tucked in the seats. Great problem. ..The Range Rover floor is not flat like T3. It is angled for each seat. We have had to make angled plates to the floor and weld them in.
Next we had to remove the existing seat rails for the T3 seats and weld up the small holes we created.
A lot of the work on the car is very subtle but like you guys know...it takes ages ! |

A lot of t3''s have a reduced turning circle with a narrowed beam. The tyres can scrub the inner wings. To overcome the problem we have heated the inner wings and carfully hammered them back keeping a curve. It takes about 3 hours per side. |
It's not everyday day you see a Michelin XZX's. Did you cycle the front end thru it's full range of motion while adjusting the inner fender? Just asking, as it's easier to do now, than it is after it's painted. Don't forget to add some weight when you do, as it'll have a driver in it at some point. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

The area under the front is an horrendous area to smooth out. There was a bit of surface rust but it is all very solid. The shapes are so awkward but all need sanding by hand and all need a small skim of filler. The first 20 hours are the worst ha ha |

That's where I use hi build primer to fill those kinds of imperfections. I like sand blasting for that kind of rust though, as it makes for quick work stripping it (like your upper pics show (red over tan car)). _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

The picture show the removal of the bump stops from the swing arm..
We carefuly cut out the bump stops and welded up the area. This allows the use of the EMPI 8 spokes and large tyres. The tyres will be Firestone wide ovals.. They have released radial versions of the tyre. Previously they were only available in bias, which would make them illegal in England if you used Michelin radials on the front. |

The sway away spring plates are a nice touch.
The t-3 pan in the background looks good. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

The battery usually sits right on the pan and often rusts out.
Gareth Wooton from Wootton Motors decided we needed to have a battery tray lifted above the pan.
He made steel blocks and welded them into position. The tray is a really good repro from an early Ford Escort Mexico.
The second plate is another 'lifted' steel plate to take the compressor for the two front air shocks. |

The photos show how good the inner rear wings were on the body. Absolutely no welding was needed... good old California weather. |

Are you going to seam seal those seams like the factory originally did? _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

The picture is not very good but it shows the angled seat bases welded in and light filling to smooth them into position.
The angled bases compensate for the fact that in the Range Rover the floors are angled.
The original inner and outer seat rails were carefully removed. The whole setup is much more tidy than the original setup which is an extra advantage.
The hole in the centre is covered by the Range Rover bases, which have forward and backward adjustment built in. |

Preparing the floorpan has been a massive task.
We used a special 'light' filler. Using a tougher filler causes problems. It breaks out when you are sanding less than 0.5 mm and are trying to get a smooth edge.
Gareth spent say 30hrs roughing out, and they recon I spent over 300 hour's !!!!!
Both sides were prepared because the car will not have carpet in.. The pressings in the floorpan mean it would be near impossible to flat it after paint without going through on say corners. It meant it had to be 'Straight out of the gun', so it had to be as perfect in primer as is possible. |

The floorpan is a main feature of the car.
There will be no carpets in it so it has to be as good as we can get it. I have around 300 hours in it to do the both sides. Alan and Gareth Wooton have also put in hours.
The tiny corners in the ribs are the worst, Here we used the foam backed rubbing pads. |

Alan Wootton spraying the first coats of etch primer onto the floorpan. The modified engine stands allow it to be rotated. Air blown to remove any dust, prep wiped, tack ragged and sprayed.

Final painting of the floorpan by Alan Wootton...
The picture also shows the seat bases welded in, and the heater ducts removed from the rear panel.
To show the floorpan the car will have no carpets, just mats for when it is driven. |
