I’m having some heads machined for my 1200 stale air build.... when flycutting the head/cylinder mating surface is it advisable to remove the same amount of material out of the step where the copper sealing washer goes? Is this normal practice or will the crush washers absorb the difference?

The surfaces have to be even or level to each other. Or it will tweak when torqued down.

A competent machinist can get this job done.

Are you talking about the sealing surface for the intake?

If so, no, that would make the problem worse because you are making the engine narrower. The intake will need to be narrower as well. If it's not too much of a fly cut, the intake should be able to flex enough to still seal. If it's deeper, then the intake may need to be cut and re-welded.

No, just talking about the cylinder and the head mating surfaces....the heads on a stale air 40 have a crush ring around the barrel that seats in a step around the combustion chamber.

I forgot about that detail with the stale air. Leaking combustion gasses/exhaust getting blown into the cabin wouldn't be good would it... Sorry IDK the answer.

I think I’m just gonna have him take off the same material outta the step that he removes with the fly cut.... Probably no more than .010 to clean them up.
