I have new pump and tank and still the buzz. I just did the resistor fixed as noted and forgot about it. _________________ '86 Westfalia 2.0L Zetec

Yeah I thought of that and tried it last night but no difference... _________________ 1986 Vanagon GL 2.1 |

I figure that a resistor slows the pump enough so that it doesn't over-heat enough to cavitate which would be good if it doesn't lower the fuel pressure too much to affect the injectors and that would keep it from getting burned out and failing on the road.
I just wonder why the pump never made a sound for many months after I bought the van and then all of a sudden started making a little buzz and then more and more. It doesn't start buzzing right away, but as the engine warms up it gets louder and louder. _________________ 1986 Vanagon GL 2.1 |

I'd still try a tank of fuel drier.
It seems water in gas is more common in the winter, in humid climates, or after long wet spells (knowing you'd said it hasn't rained lately).
It's possible, too that you got a "wet" fill of gas and some is stuck in the pump. That happens.
Fuel drier is cheap and easy, I do it every few thousand miles as a preventative.
I'll add... sometimes it's easy to not notice the buzz until you do, and once you do it seems louder in focusing on it.
Regardless, it shouldn't do it, as you know. It'd be interesting to clean the front end of the pump with a Q-Tip, and also (temporarily!) fit some clear line into the pump to look for air bubbles. Motorcycle shops should have some clear fuel line (or racing kart shops, which is what we raced with and air leaks were really obvious). _________________ ‘84 Westy, 2.1L with Digijet, 5.43 R+P, GT Gears

Did you replace the original hard fuel line? When I did mine I used FI rated hose if that makes any difference. Pre-pump I use 1/2 inch marine fuel hose. I have been running a pre-filter with hose size adapter because I have an old tank and have noticed some fine sediment in the filter. Did replace my old pump and noticed the new one buzzing, but found a loose connection to the pre-filter so it was sucking air. My fuel pump is grounded to the engine ground point in the engine bay which is original I think. Recently I noticed a performance problem and checked the fuel pressure which was not holding it's normal 40 psi when cycling the fuel pump.(Subaru test mode). A quick pinch on the return line spiked the fuel pressure so the fuel pump was OK. I replaced the fuel pressure regulator and performance is much better, but haven't re-checked the pressure yet. Maybe running a fuel system cleaner through it would be worth a try? I've run some Seafoam and the GumOut product (Techron?) through it. I've mostly used Chevron with Techron and added a little fuel injector cleaner with each fillup, although lately I've been using Shell Nitro 92 with no ethanol. |

I already got another one off Amazon, I could return the one I just installed and on and on until I find a winner... _________________ 1986 Vanagon GL 2.1 |

Split one in 2, you will see China inside
Ha! Maybe that's why you see Bosch pumps at $250 CAN from one supplier and $100 from another. I got the cheaper one but keeping the old one as a spare. |

I too had the buzzing fuel pump on my 1991 2.1 Vanagon..bugged me.
I replaced the fuel pump (which was working fine but had about 100K miles on it) with a new Bosch from one of our favorite online vendors. New fuel filter also.
The buzz was still there.
As an experiment I started using ethanol free fuel about a year ago. Available at the local QT here in Georgia.
After about 200/300 miles (two tankfuls) the buzz was almost gone.
Just yesterday I filled up again with ethanol free and noted that the buzz was completely gone..zero..no buzz.
My guess is our older fuel pumps were designed around ethanol free fuel at a certain density..with the changes in fuel the pumps just buzz like crazy.
I also get a few more MPG with ethanol free fuel. |

interesting to note that buslab does not sell the Bosch pump, they say:
