Real quick, I am putting my 36hp together and the directions are unclear on orientation of the main bearing right behind the pulley, does the groove in the bearing go on the inside or the outside?

Reviving an old thread here. I have a similar question but with the #3 bearing behind the crank gears. The dowel pin is centered in the saddle and the bearing will work either way but is one direction preferred over the other? The only difference is the location of the oil holes in the bearing move a few degrees.

According to the late 356 guru Harry Pellow, the oil hole that is furthest from the dowel pin should be positioned toward the camshaft, or the bottom of the cases. I agree with him.

I know I'm reviving an old thread, but this info was valuable. Thank you Jack's!
