Very Happy I know that it was a popular thing for celebrities BITD to drive Volkswagens rather than other more expensive automobiles.
Perhaps that particular Karmann Ghia may have been customized for Marty Feldman's personal use.

Judging by the look of how the door fits in its opening and the overall "funky" look of the entire lower portion of the body below the side trim, I'd guess that poor old Karmann Ghia suffered some pretty extensive accident damage.
(I can't quite tell if that is a completely different side trim, or if there's just a shadow between the upper and lower section of regular trim.)

Perhaps they decided to take advantage of the Ghia already being in the body shop and decided to have some additional "custom" work done at the same time?

I suppose it's also possible that the necessary "correct" repair panels and miscellaneous components were not available for whatever reason, so they had to make do with whatever materials they had on hand.

The license plate may give a clue to some other more knowledgable member here as to just where in the world this photo may have been taken.

I’ve posted videos on this thread before, seems as good a place as any!
This is a cool clip from 1962/3 of a Ghia vert on an alpine toll road/customs post.
From the Aircooled Automotive FB page.
Love it!

The car is from Regensburg, Germany and has some accessory beauty rings and the ‘Alfa’ nosepiece!
Cost was 3 Deutsche mark for the return ticket! (I’ll find out the dollar equivalent in 1962)

Edit: about $0.75, (25p UK)

My parents were driving their Beetle, but my mum's best friend was driving her early Ghia. By the time I was born my parents had sold their Bug, but Aileen hadn't sold the Ghia and I do remember riding around in it. The worst road I can remember from the back seat was a local ski hill road...nothing like the VW Club Mud Run seen here Surprised

Must have been cool back in the day, you get your delivery of a new Ghia, and a band comes along to welcome you to each other!! Wish dealers today had that kind of salesmanship!

I don't think a couple of huntsmen comes to welcome you to the new Ghia.
