i say leave it as is. maybe find a used tire shop that you can buy a couple different sizes to really dial in the look you're going for _________________ TastyGarage |

I think it's probably ok. If I need to, I'll downsize the rears to 185-65-15. |

Just dialled in the suspension a bit on my 66
And have sorted the wheels.
I was running 5.5J all round, with 195/65/15’s on the rear, with 175/65/15’s up front. All on Nankangs
I have changed the fronts to 4.5J with Falken 155/60/15’s
New upper and lower ball joints
Sway away adjusters done
New rear swing plates
Bugpack short front shocks
Car really feels good to drive, and I like the ride

Perhaps in a static, situation like turning the wheel while sitting, but if you're moving a slightly wider tire isn't going to make that much of a difference.
My 60 for reference:
185/60/15 front on 15x5.5" wheels 3.75" backspacing, 205/65/15 rear on 15x5.5 with stock back spacing. |
Has to be one of the best looking rides I've ever laid my eyes on... |

REVISING MY PREVIOUS POST
Before I start buying I wanted to get some feedback. Based upon everyone's posts and where I want to have my 67 sit I'm thinking:
Front
2.5" drop spindles
Stock Beam
Disc brake conversion (Wilwood)
15" Sprintstar wheels
165/65 tires
Rear:
2.5" Drop Spring plates
15" Sprintstar wheels
195/55 or 165/65 tires
Disc brakes
Should I got 165/65 all around? The 195/55 is the same size, just wider. From what I read on other posts the 165/65 should work. Right? _________________ North Bay Air Cooled - VW Club in Napa, CA

Nice car, is that a typo on the tire size of 155/60
That would make the tire an inch shorter than a 135/80? _________________ https://www.facebook.com/groups/2778888602388847/?ref=share

Hi Bigjack
Not a typo
I have stock adjustable front beam, running 4.5J repop Fuch’s ET 20 with 155x60x15 Falken tyres on.
At the rear, I am running 5.5J’s ET20 with 1” spacers and the tyres are 195x65x15 Nankang tyres.
My speedometer is obviously out, but thinking of sending it of to Thorsten in Germany to get it refurbished and recalibrated ( he’s a Samba member, and very well regarded)
Here’s a shot of the front and rear

Hi Mutt
Very nice.
That tire looks great on there, good to know that a tire that short (shorter than a 135/80) can look that good and still drive nice. _________________ https://www.facebook.com/groups/2778888602388847/?ref=share

Not that I advocate removing ANY of the leafs from the pack but you REALLY shouldn't remove them from the top spring pack.
The lower trailing arms are now the ones that are doing most of the work & those are the ones where the ball joints are trying to pull apart instead of compressing together like the upper ones.
Please consider reinstalling the missing leaves & install adjusters to dial in your ride height. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

How does a 4" or even 2" narrowed beam have shock towers that fit for early models? My 63' barely has room for a finger behind the shock tower.
I would love to put 2" narrowed adjustable beam on the car but don't want to give up the shock towers. Looking at CBP (http://www.cbperformance.com/product-p/6278.htm) it still has shock towers on the beam that doesn't make sense. Where do the 2 inches get taken out if the towers are still outside the quarter panels?

I just measured my shock towers and I have exactly an inch to just under an inch to the center of the tower. so removing 2 inches, it would still be rubbing.
How do people remove 4 inches and still have towers? |

The shock towers are replaced with thinner sheet stock. Look closely at the pictures of the beams. I have 2” narrowed beams on two cars and no issues at all. Buddy has a 4” Beam from another builder and it has shock towers and they fit. _________________ 1960 Indigo Blue Ragtop (Blue Barry)

Hi Murt - Kind of an old post, but are you running dropped spindles as well with your setup, or adjusters only on a stock width beam? Any rubbing anywhere? Your setup looks great. Thanks!

Hi Carlyle
I'm not running dropped spindles, Stock Beam, and the adjusters only. I've never had any rubbing at all
