Starting my own project to make side curtains using 1" x 3/16" flat stock. I am using flat stock that is wider than the original to use a retainer around the inside to hold the plastic windows in.
I started by drilling out the rivets in the door supports and removed them.
I took the measurements with a digital protractor to make it easier to miter the corners.
I tig'ed it together on some plates to try and keep it flat.
More pictures to come. |

I'll be interested to see how this turns out! My side curtains are pretty bad. _________________ 1963 Beetle...My mom's car that got sold in 2012

Contact this guy, he is in Monterrey Mexico, I've seen his work, he did mine, takes his time but he does quality work at a good price, Tell Him Francisco from the "Club Safari de Mexico" sent you. I'm sure he can ship internationally. I got mine on a trip to Mexico. You can either send them your frames or he makes new once.

Sending out my frames to be redone would take the fun out of it.
Didn't spend much time on the curtains today. I knocked the rivets out of the posts and the holes were just the right size for m5 x .8 screws. The frame holes are countersunk for countersunk stainless socket head screws.
Here is a profile picture of the seal that I found on Amazon. I bought this just before I ordered the replacement seal for my hood. Turns they are exactly the same profile but the Amazon seal has a neoprene flap. The hood seal is all rubber. I am going to use the Amazon seal to replace the one on the decklid.
FYI, I haven't measured how long the seal is for the hood but I guesstimate that the Amazon seal and Jbugs seal are about the same price per foot. The Amazon seal was $45 for 30 feet with free next day shipping. I'm thinking the neoprene seal will be a little more delicate and flexible against the soft top anyway. |

Found the short piece that was left over after replacing the hood seal. Here is a comparison. Amazon seal on the right.
Found this seal on Amazon today. If the first one has too much curl to it I may get this one to try.
Added a retainer lip to the inside of the window frame.
I was originally going to sandwich the window against the frame from the outside with an L shaped retainer but changed my mind after picking up some acrylic today. I got 3/16" thick acrylic which is the same as the flat stock for the frame. Tomorrow I will make an aluminum retainer for the outside and drill and tap the frame to screw it in place. |

Made an aluminum retainer today for the outside of the window frame. Tapped the frame for m4 countersunk screws.

Jimmy rigged the drill press to a motorcycle to use as an adjustable height table. Needed a larger surface to support the frames while I drill all of the holes for the retainers and support studs. Finished cutting and welding the other 3 frames. Also cut and welded the other 3 retainers. I will take some more pictures later but here is what the drill press looks. It actually works pretty well.

Maybe. Would definitely have to come up with a more efficient way of making them. |

Getting closer. Made some plastic snow today. I have one frame fully assembled. Need to finish cutting out three more windows. I'm also waiting on more screws for the retainers. The next big step is to start fitting the knock on seal around the edge. The corners are going to be fun.

Its been fun. Nice being able to see through the windows now. I made hinge mirror mounts a while back which made the mirrors contact the windows. I'll need to put rubber on the door restraints so they don't open too far. Don't want the mirrors damaging the new windows. Next I'll need to make a rack to hold them under the hood. I'm thinking sockets for the pins to fit into and some kind of latch over the top to keep them spaced apart.
I'll post some daytime pics with all the windows in. |

I ended up powder coating the aluminum retainers. Got a good deal on the powder coating system at HF.

Those are Great!!!
my thought was also for a thin sheet metal skirt around it so fabric has a Full size area so there Is overlapping of front windows to back
also for a better seal at door
are you Making them?
so u riveted them To the frames from the outside?
is there anywhere we could get proper top material to cover than I'm
then the PC windows can be Within the fabric Not just riveted to the inside
I have also thought of almost a thin poster frame inserted used as a rail to Slide part of the window open _________________ 74 Mexi Swamp Thing. 70 square volksrod (Swamp Rat)..65 C10

Yes- I made them. The windows aren't riveted in. It's 1/8" acrylic. The basic frame has 1/4" wide flat stock welded in as a lip for the inside of the acrylic to rest against. There is an aluminum retainer screwed on from the outside with countersink m3 screws (maybe why they look like rivets). The frame is 3/4" wide 1/8" flat stock from HD tug welded so I would have to do a bunch if finish work. The outside retainer is 3/4" aluminum flat stock from HD. I think it's 5052 with either some kind of coating or anodized. Whichever it is, it's truffle to weld. Should have gotten proper aluminium from the metal yard. |
