I don't remember ever seeing a serial number on a transmission.
And rancho doesn't stamp them.
But i could be wrong.

if i got a rancho, dave says they stamp their code under the serial number and they can referance it to see whats in it.should of asked him where its located, but didn't-my bad, i'll call back monday, just putting this out there.

Transaxle part number stampings are on the right side for early 60's models

| There's a flat underneath, towards the front of the trans, it's usually hidden under a thick coat or road grime. Generally a two-letter code at the beginning, then numbers. The 2 letter code tells you about the stock boxes, not sure about Rancho's. |

the previous owner said it had a rancho trans,but didn't know much about it, i bought it in december(christmas present to me)and now going over it

Thanks,this franken bug is perfect for me in every way. My first vw was a"57 beetle"so i feel like i'm in it,and always wanted a split window and small tailights. PLUS THE RAG TOP. I ordered a "2332" from RON@SCAT and working with Dave@RANCHO so dis is "MY DREAM BUG"
i'll post the renevation in time.

Because in working on VWs for 45 years I don't remember seeing a serial number. Now a part number is something totally different.
I said I could be wrong because I didn't want you to take my comment as an absolute. It would be better to wait for someone else to confirm.
The seller said it had a Rancho transmission. If he can not produce a receipt then don't assume it's true.

too bad you didn't know rancho stamps there trans. w/code for there records.

Yes Rancho stamp a number on every transaxle they build or rebuild. It is probably the invoice number so they can keep a record of what they did.

finally got to see what my trans. was--its a stock re-build in 2011 by rancho-nothing fancy, but now i can get one!
