Thats precarious angle.
Brandon i shied away from getting the VA antique plates because I thought you are restricted to a 200 mile radius unless going to car shows. |

You're right, that's going to change in 2019. I'm now a TN resident and won't have to pay property tax like VA.
I moved the vehicle over pretty far over away from white line. I should have moved it back right before he showed up. But yeah it looks bad in the pics. _________________ Brandon

How's about races?
We'll be at one in VA in October.

I just replaced all my hoses inside the engine bay.
My oil cooler coolant return hose split an hour into a local road trip.
AAA for the win. _________________ 9 1/2 - missing a few pieces.

I've been to many races in Bristol - but not anywhere else. Hit me up when you're in the area! _________________ Brandon

Will do!
SCCA Runoffs. VIR is a classic road course, 20-something classes racing over a full week, cheap tickets, cheap camping, a blast, have been to 18 since 1972 (first time this event will be at VIR over 56 runnings).
FORMULA VEE is one class! _________________ ‘84 Westy, 2.1L with Digijet, 5.43 R+P, GT Gears

Last summer we were going to Cologne with visitors from the States.
There was a traffic jam coming off of the freeway at the first traffic light. I suddenly noticed steam coming from the engine compartment. I pulled over and found the following:
The first thing I did was to call the ADAC (German equivalent to AAA). While they were on their way I called a friend asking for support and I got a phone number of a T3 specialist in Cologne. Luckily I was able to persuade him to help us out although it was Saturday and he was about to close his shop.
We got a piggyback ride on the tow truck to the shop and two hours later we were back on the road.
At the shop:
To bad our visitors didn't get to see too much of Cologne after all.
The real culprit happened to be the blue cap, which opened at 4 Bar instead of 1 Bar. _________________ - Michael

Great photo of the dog! I also got to experience a tow due to a snapped head stud. We were just about at the summit of Stevens Pass when it happened. I managed to limp it into the ski lodge parking lot. Had it towed all the way to Seattle on New Year's Eve. You don't want to know what that cost me
I'll be joining AAA ASAP.

Should we just direct people to this thread when they ask if vanagons are reliable? |

Broke down on HWY 410 near Mt Rainier (bigfoot country) lost all forward gears in my automatic transmission late Oct. Luckily I had a spare which though untested worked out just fine. However, original 2.1l engine with approx 250k on it needs replacement oil pressure at rpm out of spec. Will be converting to Subaru power once I gather all parts needed.

I'd say not. as in my last ~4,ooo mile road trip I saw far more modern vehicles on the side of the road and wreckers than vanagons.. that alone means we're superior..

This is the only time it's been on a flatbed since I've owned it. Unfortunately it was 3rd gear... Thankfully it happened locally so it was a very low stress breakdown. |

Our first tow...
Having started it up on a visit last December only to find a pretty major coolant leak at the thermostat housing...
I flew down to get it fixed - arrived in Seattle yesterday (79° Hello summer...beautiful last day of winter!) I had ordered up a new cast aluminum housing from GoWesty, but not inclined to tackle this on the rocks where it sits, so off to Small Car Preformance...
Delivered an hour and 20 mins after calling AAA roadside assistance - thank you AAA and Bethel Towing! _________________ '91 Westfalia, Bordeaux Red Pearl 2.1L 2wd Auto

I'll be joining in tomorrow with a flatbed ride to my mechanics for the major makeover. The van is currently bleeding both coolant and oil and I won't risk a breakdown in the busy downtown core.
BTW Nice Norseman Apollo awning. I've got one just like it. Oldies but they still work fine.
I looked at the cast aluminum housing but the Temperature Gauge Calibration Kit and the fact that you still needed to buy a thermostat cover -- and a thermostat! -- put me off of it. I bought the nylon bundle instead and will carry another as spare. |
