Make sure it is a trailer tire and not a tire for a motor scooter. Scooter tires are very rounded at the tread and they nake a trailer handle very poorly.

The cute little whitewall 4.80 X 8 tires are all scooter tires-- resist the temptation.

I agree that the symptoms you describe aren't the brackets, but when you slam on the brakes or put too much load on them, they'll taco shell.

Here is the new and improved version.
Changes...
Added gussets,
doubled tounge thickness,
lowered the hitch pin plates (holes yet to be drilled).

Better, but'd I'd still go U channel like an OG Bumper Bracket. what are you fastening them with, the holes look awfully small? Nice job though.

The channel on the brackets is quite thin. These are 3/8" and very stout. When they are attached you can jump on one and there is no play or give. I used the existing two bumper bolt holes and added a third. So each side is attached with 3 - 3/8" bolts.

I put a 25pound weight right above the wheel in the trailer and it stopped any wheel bounce or vibration. lonotch

I second that question as my bus is too tall for any kind of bumper mount.
And I plan on going a little higher.

Does anyone have the trailer's forward-arm pin hole height... to ground... dimension that works?
In other words... what is a good center of pin to ground distance?
(not using a scooter tire... but a normal trailer tire on the stock rim)

I had a clamshell allstate that got the hop pretty bad. I actually solved the problem.

after the last time it did that, I sold it. Problem solved.

Check out motor scooter parts sellers.

I have a Motorvation motorcycle trailer that needed tires. They are a non standard size but found some at a motor scooter parts place online.

I got a clamshell last year. After I spent a couple days of trial and error with adjusting the wheel bearings, angle of the trailer, and testing different amounts of weight in the back, I cured the hop. In fact, I drove well over 3000 miles with the trailer and never had it hop even once after the initial dial-in. Too bad so many others have had so many issues with it. Maybe I got lucky?

Maybe! I opted for something more stable...

I’d trade my Allstate and my Besco folding trailer for one of those.

In the mid-sixties, Sears finally got smart and put in an adjustment for their latest model of SWTs, so that the angle of the trailer could be modified. The trick is to run them slightly nose-down, as previous posters have noted. I don't have an exact angle, and suspect that it's different for the various makes and models. I arrived at my estimate through trial and error.

I've also found that the trailer is much happier if I'm putting at least fifty pounds of cargo in it.

I didn't see the URL for my write-up on Allstate single-wheel trailers anywhere else on the thread, but here it is:
