My muffler on my engine is too hot and has bubbled the paint on the rear apron. For the time being I have carboard and tin foil stuck in the rear apron.
As a more permanent solution I would like to cut a sheet of Aluminium and put some sort of heat shield material on the plate.
Is there any material sold in sheets that would disapate the heat well.

Are you running a stock muffler?
Are any of the pipes touching the body?

If running stock then your engine is not in tune and running too hot. Further, you need to make sure you do not have any exhaust pipes touching any part of the body or you will cause such a problem. Leaky seals at the base of the tail pipes are another potential cause.

If none of the above is of use to you then you then take a look at some of the products offered by Eastwood at www.eastwood.com . If you enter the key words “heat control” in the search bar you will get several different products to help you out.

Get rid of the cardboard! If you exhaust is hot enough to bubble paint, it will burn the cardboard and possibly something a bit more important... I would try and fab something out of aluminum or sheet metal. The main thing to gain is an air space between the muffler and heat sheild and from the heat sheild to the apron.
good luck.

This is an Arbarth on a 1500cc Okrasa. The engine is in tune and tops out heatwise at 100c 212f. Well maybe it running a tad rich but the temp stays in check.

The Arbarth tucks in too close to the apron. I have about 1/8" clearance under the apron and about the same towards the inside edge. I have the pipes taped which is probably also throwing more heat towards the body of the muffler. You can grab the pipes with your hand with the wrapping on it. That heat has to go somewhere.
In addition I don't think its the paint thats the problem but the skim coat of filler underneath that is the problem.

The cardboard with tin foil was just to go to a VW show 20 minutes up the road. I suppose I could cut the tubes and relocate. An easier fix would be a permanent heat shield.

Man Craig I would hit up a junkyard. Lots of cars have thin little preform panels that go between exhausts/turbos and firewalls etc. Seems like that would be a good and cheap thing to try. You could pop rivet it to the apron stiffener panel.

After purchasing lots of crap from JCWhitney when I was a teenager I didn't think I would ever order anything for my VW's, especially a split but they had some good heatshield materials.

hi,

check thermotec.com . I bought some stuff from them. They have all kinds of different heat protection stuff. I bought it at a hot rod / performance store and the prices are ok.
