I think he's speaking of the Big Bend State Park in Texas where some folks go each year following Christmas.

Sorry for the confusion Crofty. I was referring to our road trip out to Big Bend Park Dec. 26 to 30 2018.
SST has always been my goal for the bus, but I haven't worked out a reasonable way to get out there and back. So, the Big Bend trip has been a substitute the last 4 years.

Perhaps I will change the title of the thread.

Zozo, you're invited to the BBBB 2019. There is one other bus from San Antonio that makes the trip.

Your years of effort bringing the bus from this first picture to what it is today should have the whole state of Texas backing you for your 20th anniversary Shasta Snow Trip journey. Change the thread name to reflect your new SST goal, channel your bus' inner badass, watch Clint Eastwood movies and make that shit happen!

Here's Kristen's video from this year to inspire you:

Thank you. I'm pulling the ass-end out this week to have Professor Pierce rebuild the trans and the RGBs. (The bungee cord solution has run its course and will eventually quit working.) Once that's complete I'm hoping to visit the shows as well as the other events.

Thank you Brian!
I was sitting here last night watching the 2019 SST videos, (and some older ones) when I asked my wife to take a look, she watched and she said "you need to go there, soon". I agreed, and started my To Do list.
Then, today I see your post, and know without a doubt, I better get in gear and just do it. Thank you, thank you.
I still have some details to figure out, but I have 11 1/2 months to do it.
I looked at my bus speedo today, I have 9800 miles on the bus, so I don't have the "it's not broken in yet" excuse either.
I do have some questions, so may shoot a pm to you.

Thanks again, I'm back on track. " Do, or Do not, there is no try"

My son and I had Prof. Pierce rebuild our trans several years ago.
SA and Austin shows coming up, I hope to see you and your bus there.
Thanks!

Agreed Greg Kristen's video is amazing for the 2019 Shasta trip. Looking forward to kombisutra's thread for 2019 updates. I like how he has updated links from 2012-current so we can select the year to watch/read.

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=90987&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

I also like the advice to change this to 2020, good idea kombisutra. And who bought Lou's Pamper bus? Looking forward to updates on silkvw's 59 to live vicariously in 2020 Wink

I would but lowering 3.5" and fresh paint going on that type of trip... I don't think so 😬

Hi Linda. Everett changed the title for me.
I think my wife has seen the "Flying Pampers". She knows (as I do) I need my bus to get me back home. I plan to keep it on the ground. She has already watched me get hit in my single cab, and flipped over, that was bad enough!

If you will be leaving from Austin, let's get together and plan the trip.
It will be awesome!

I'm still making some progress on the bus. And, adding items to my "to do" list.

Here is an update:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

small first aid kit. I hope it's all I ever need.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

spare parts box. Vintage Military type. Just about full.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

It's a small speaker, but has good sound. I usually have it turned down low when I have the CB radio on anyway. Fits in my cup holder too!

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I built the second version of the bulkhead cabinet. Walnut trim, cup holders, and bay grab handle. Space for spare parts box on the drivers side.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

New seals on one pop out window, so far. It was really difficult to get the window installed. Cool weather and stiff seals don't help, I guess. I may never open the window.

Questions:
1. Any recommendations for roof rack mounted driving lights?
2. Will snow chains on narrow Beetle wheels and tires work on a bus? I don't have room for chains on my Grabber bus tires.
3. 2020 SST, anyone from AZ, NM, or TX going? Sure would like to have someone else traveling with me.

I have Hella 500 driving beams mounted on my rack.
Great lighting pattern, classic proven beam.

Thanks Birdmanhere! I'll take a look at them. They look great on your bus. I like the ammo box too.
I have a bay window fog light switch in my dash now, I'm wondering if I'll need a relay for the driving lights, and how to wire everything together properly?
