I was getting sick of using the ole vice and gland nut combo and it wasn't stable enough when torquing rods, etc. So I built this with an old German gland nut and 1/4" steel - attached it to one of my work benches. It seems a lot more rigid now and easy on and off. I thought making is 3.5" high would be a good strategy when mounting to 2X4 backing.

I welded a piece of round pipe to the back of a gland nut, then drilled a hole in the front of my bench.
Easy to rotate the crank etc. Just put the gland nut- pipe away when done. Works pretty well. |

I welded a gland nut to my engine stand.

If you are looking to buy a welder or learn to weld there is a welding stickie in the body/paint forum.
Look into taking an adult evening welding class at the high school Vo-Tech or community college.

Here is my crank stand. Only took a few moments to make. No welding required and looks just like the Bentley Book photo. IMO it's easier to install rods when the crank is vertical.

Thanks for the link. I have been watching this guy’s videos and they are good. Just waiting for my helmet and C25 cylinder to arrive so I can start hands-on practicing. I plan to melt a lot of wire on scrap before getting anywhere near my single cab!

I ran fluxcore one pos Lincoln a hand full of times and was going to do some cage work on my baja and I wanted some nicer welds. I bought the titanium 170 from harbor freight, it does 110 or 220 and is a nice machine. This was the first or second of a couple practice welds on the tubing I'm using.
That led to this yesterday

Wow! I didn't think welders were this cheap! Go China!
That seems so odd to say.
If I may ask how much did you end up buying above and beyond the welder?
Obviously, I'll need a Helmet and a stand but other than that can I open the box and start wreaking havoc?
And just to keep it on topic, I had this welded up by the Fabrication shop down the street. It goes in the vise so I can turn it vertical, horizontal or whatever. I bought a cheap gland nut and Fab shop donated a drop piece.

Mine is a gland nut welded to a pipe with a piece of angle on it. I can clamp it in a vise or bolt it to the bench.

I like to use the flywheel myself when assembling the crank/rods/gears. |

Yes open box and setup it up, machines generally comes with a roll of fluxcore wire (FCAW) for demo... Personally though I like solid wire and shield gas (GMAW)...
One does not NEED a cart but it sure helps because if welder is sitting on floor, it is always in wrong location.... Build one, it generally is first project for new welder owner, its a wright of passage....
And put biggest wheels/casters under it you can get, those itty-bitty cheep caster get stuck on smallest little bits of trash on floor... Also consider a proper sized/type extension cord for welder (120v or 240V configuration) ...
Biggest decision is what can you afford and are you going to get 120V machine (maxes out about 140 Amp) or 240 volt machine or dual voltage machine..
And it welded a gland nut on side of engine stand for me....
Now back to regulatory scheduled program (discussion)....
