It sounds like you may have a valve(s) seized in its guide. You could try spraying some penetrating oil on the stems and then give it a hour or two to soak in and try it again.

No time like the present to pull the heads and have them gone through though.

the valves seem to close with the rockers off. i want to get a leak down test done with the rockers in place before i pull the heads. once that is done, the heads are coming off.

is doing the leak down test a waste of time? i figured any issues with the valves would present themselves with the leak down.

A leak down test would help let you know the condition but might also give meaningless results. If a valve isn't closing because there is carbon between the valve and the seat the leakdown test may indicate a bad valve when there actually isn't one. This is a very common problem when the intake manifolds have been removed from the engine breaking carbon loose which then falls down into the ports, it can take several minutes of running to get the last of the carbon to clear itself. If your test indicates a leaking valve then you can take a brass drift and a hammer and tap on the end of the valve repeatedly, this may or may not do the job 100%.

No one wasted any money on oil changes on this one. Sad

The lifters probably beat themselves to death for thirty minute each time it was started. Don't think I have had one of my own engines come close to looking that bad EVER, even aircooled engines back in the seventies running the crappy oil SF that was available back them. I did run straight weight oils during the heat of summer which helped a lot.

Yep, that needs to come apart. Way too much muckety-muck for my liking.

The problem is not the bent pushrods, but whatever caused the pushrods to bend, likely a couple of valves seized to their guides.

The glass is likely a none issue, it didn't come from your engine and most likely didn't hurt anything at all.

tapped on all the valves with a rubber mallet and they are moving, tested with my other set of push rods. something to remember for the next engine...

that glass is from the accident Dave mentioned, it's amazing that i found more glass when i cleaned around the pulley.
