my 91 2.1 snorted rain water the other day and it got in the air box and it started running and missing like crazy....thought it would dry out and run well but not so, seems like cylinder 3&4 isn’t firing but 1&2 is, 1&2 plug was black with soot but 3&4 was dry as a bone? I unplugged 3&4 at the dist cap and got an orange spark and unplugged fuel injector plug of those two with no change in engine speed but unpluging 1&2 of either plug or fuel injectors it shuts off the engine....the spray pattern was off a bit so I swapped out 3&4 injectors with good used ones... a few years ago i had an oxygen sensor short out in a rain storm but dont think its that this time but I installed I new one with no change??? Things I have done so far... swapped the ecu, new oxygen sensor new dist cap and rotor two known good fuel injectors, fuel pressure regulator, spark plugs checked for air leak checked wiring for any change in rpms (thats how i found my new GoWesty distributor was a bad one) blew out the return fuel line, advance the distributor retarded the distributor unplugged the oxygen sensor plugged it back in unplugged the afm plugged it back in used my spare ecu and even did a compression test....btw I have the shoebox-electronix ecu monitor and everything was checking out but it started to flake out and its not reading right now... _________________ THE FEW THE PROUD THE ORIGINAL VW WATERBOXER -> looking for a original 91 vanagon owners manual with 1991 on the cover http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmuiG2tUsP4&feature=share https://picasaweb.google.com/101290228103300323836/BostonBobFlywheelVideo#5543000332201103922 |

have you changed your air filter? a wet air filter can cause drivability havoc. _________________ -dan

Morning,
Hope you get it running OK. How did rain water get into the airbox? Looking to avoid that possibility. _________________ 1990 Orly Blue Carat |

I guess the right air vent? first time ever and I have had a lot of vanagons it was raining very hard that morning |
I cannot imagine how this could happen from a hard rain, I think to get water in your intake you pretty much need to have water coming in from underneath the van (assuming your Vanagon is a regular 2wd with the stock 2.1 airbox) like if you drove through a flooded area.
How exactly did you verify the "water got in the air box" claim? Sorry if I sound skeptical but... I'm skeptical _________________ Grant

lol for one thing the filter was damp and it had water residue at the bottom where the filter sits I was like how the heck??? I had drove about 40 miles in this storm with ponding on the rd so I pulled off to take a nap for about 45 min and when I went to start it it started to miss real bad and the next 10 or 15 miles home was a bit on the slow side with very little power... _________________ THE FEW THE PROUD THE ORIGINAL VW WATERBOXER -> looking for a original 91 vanagon owners manual with 1991 on the cover http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmuiG2tUsP4&feature=share https://picasaweb.google.com/101290228103300323836/BostonBobFlywheelVideo#5543000332201103922 |

the good news is that since the air intake for the AFM is 6" above the bottom of the airbox, you didn't suck in a slug of water and bend a rod or something nasty.
were it my van and this rough running truly associated with the rain run, i'd pop the dist cap, dry it and the dist with a hair dryer, replace the plug wires, change spark plugs or at least clean the white insulator, put an abundance of IsoHeet in the tank while it is low, change fuel filter and drain out some gas to check for water, and think about a fuel tank reseal including the tipover valve grommets in the fuel expansion chambers. _________________ -dan

Correction, you are probably getting a fuel/water mix at the injectors.

^^^^ This
You need to determine where the water got into the fuel system and to get any water that is still in there out. |

100% behind Dave on this. Had a friend who put in a brand new fuel tank and had the same problem you do. It turned out one of the 30 year old vapor tanks had a gash in it from road shrapnel and took on water every time it rained. It could also be the hoses that run from the vapor tanks to the main. |

Add me to the evap tank list.
You may have a hole in one, or the grommet's bad.
Pour a quart of gas into a milk jug, wait a few minutes, and see if it separates into two layers. _________________ ‘84 Westy, 2.1L with Digijet, 5.43 R+P, GT Gears
