The break between the early and late style 091 and 091/1 is 1983-1/2. (Well, ALL 1983 DIESELS had 094). So, the AIR cooled uses the bay window style trans, with different shift rails and nose cone.
Having said all that, laying on the floor or not, you will not get very far taking it apart without a few special tools. (And even LESS chance of successfully reassembling it.) You need to get a few things tightened very tight, and the side bearings tightened precisely.
The parts are expensive.
It's a fair amount of work EVEN WITH THE RIGHT TOOLS!
JB WELD???? Surely you are joking.

Someone made a side cover tool using JB weld to fabricate the tool. I remember reading it. An original side cover could be pretty tight coming out after all these years. _________________ ☮️ |

Oh, I think I remember that. Actually, I took a big old wide cold chisel, ground the point flat, and knocked them around with that for many years. but it was most unsatisfying.
The real tools make it a much nicer experience.
