I am running through the checklist of items to get my thing on the road and I’ve gotten to the throttle cable part. After a bunch of compressed air and Pb blaster forced through the throttle cable tube it’s freed up nicely.
Since I recently had the carb off I had to adjust the slack in the throttle cable so the throttle can just close fully with the accelerator pedal released.
Now here’s the puzzler with the pedal fully depressed I’m probably only getting 60% throttle opening if that. It’s nowhere even close! I could understand losing a little from a worn pedal but this seems like a lot _________________ 1970 Turbo Baja Bug Turbaja 2165 t3/t4 Speeduino sequential EFI LS3 coil on plug ignition

picture of both the accelerator arm for the pedal and the carburetor would help.
stock PICT 34?
Maybe the pedal arm (not the pedal) is not going as far as it needs to with the pedal
Maybe there is another hole on the pedal arm that is further up that you can use _________________ '56 pan Dune Buggy since '69

As best I can tell everything is stock.
This pic is with the pedal pulled back for viewing

when you push the pedal lever all they way down what is stopping it?
Look at the lever where it is connected to the base, there is a little finger stop sticking out, is there anything blocking that from hitting the base?
And you can also pull that out and cut the finger off too. _________________ '56 pan Dune Buggy since '69

To check cable slack, loosen the cable from the arm, pull cable end towards you with needle nose pliers while holding arm back against stopping point in opposite direction to take slack out. Retighten.

The cable is as tight as it can be for the throttle to be able to return to idle. There’s not anything close to enough slack to lose 50% of the throttle opening _________________ 1970 Turbo Baja Bug Turbaja 2165 t3/t4 Speeduino sequential EFI LS3 coil on plug ignition

I’ll check in on that. If I actuate the roller lever instead of the pedal I only get slightly more travel if any extra at all.
I compared the throttle assembly to the one on my bug and they both look identical as far as cable placement _________________ 1970 Turbo Baja Bug Turbaja 2165 t3/t4 Speeduino sequential EFI LS3 coil on plug ignition

The cable is hung up somewhere and you have to get under the car. Between the tranny area and the front of the engine above the tranny the cable runs and it is in a rubber, flexible throttle cable tube...http://vwparts.aircooled.net/Throttle-Cable-Bowden-Tube-1966-Type-1-131721551-p/131-721-551.htm
Make sure that is not pinched anywhere (usually happens where it connects to the body near the shift linkage or where it goes over the tranny and into the back of the fan shroud. |

Try running the cable through the lower hole on your fan shroud for more play. _________________ What are the last 2 words of the National Anthem?

Who knows why the previous half a century of previous owners did what.

If you count jammed in crooked partially crossthreaded as “fitting” _________________ 1970 Turbo Baja Bug Turbaja 2165 t3/t4 Speeduino sequential EFI LS3 coil on plug ignition

pull the cable out all the way through the barrel connector on the carb and tighten it as far as you can to the very end of the stiff part, that will get you more throttle
I can see your only about half way thru _________________ Michael Basso

Pointed out that cable path is not correct. Using a shroud hole above throttle arm instead of one below it so the cable slack is being taken up at the bend. _________________ What are the last 2 words of the National Anthem?

Except for the fact that it IS in the correct hole presently
If he used the lower hole it would get a lot worse and eventually break the cable... also it would hit the top of transmission when the throttle tube went through the front of the engine.
The lower hole is for the spark plug wires holder

He might consider a throttle cable shortening kit _________________ Michael Basso

My own throttle cable opening is clearly below the plane of the accelerator arm, even using an aftermarket carb.
His appears to be parallel or even higher than the arm. So my suggestion to use lower hole would create the path that I am used to seeing and provide more slack.
Maybe the shroud isn’t seated correctly and is riding higher than normal.

it looks like the throttle tube is not secured in back of the shroud
he could also be missing the accelerator flexible guide tube altogether
from the chassis to the engine
if the accelerator guide tube is there it probably isnt mated with the throttle tube
This might also cause the problem _________________ Michael Basso
