I've just added two new picture galleries to my website from a recent visit to Stuttgart and thought you guy's might like to see them.

First we went to the New Porsche museum which is excellent and well worth a visit, then on to a Porsche Parts Swapmeet near by, also excellent!

I hope you enjoy them!!

PostPosted: Fri Apr 05, 2019 7:26 pm    Post subject: Re: Porsche Museum Pictures from recent Stuttgart trip Reply with quote

I'm crashing this thread as I'm finally getting around to posting my pictures from a trip to Stuttgart in 2011 (I hope nobody minds - but some might say I'm stretching the definition of 'recent'!) I was fortunate enough to spent an afternoon at the Porsche museum, which is across the street from the Porsche factory. Unfortunately age and time have diminished my recollection of what was said about each car, but have included what I remember/know. Others can chime in if they have more details or want to correct anything I've said.

I did find some vintage pictures for a few of the museum peices in the other Samba forums, and I've included them with this thread.

Let's start with the Porsche factory. There are two main buildings, one side does bodies and other side does all the mechanicals and assembly. There is a bridge connecting the two, and you can see finished bodies moving from one side to other, especially visible in the last pic.

The Porsche museum is located just across the intersection and conforms to the boundaries of its odd-shaped lot. The exhibition space is is suspended above street level and supported by 3 massive columns.

The entrance to the museum is slightly below ground level, one takes an escalator to get to the exhibition space. The type 64 Rome to Berlin car, rather a replica thereof, is featured prominently as you enter:

There is a restored, albeit with many later parts, a 1950 Volkswagen on the same level.

This car, license K 45 286, was built in 1948 and belonged to the Porsche family. Known as the 356 #1 Roadster, it was the first sports car built with the Porsche name. No 1 is powered by a period Volkswagen mid-mounted engine tweaked to deliver 35 horsepower.

There are a number of vintage pictures of this car in the gallery:

A few steps up to the next level, there is a line up of 356's prominently displayed. The first one in the lineup was a Porsche family car, 356A coupe license K 45 400:

This are also several vintage pictures of this car in the gallery. Somewhere along the way it lost it's front plate.

Continuing on with 356's, 356A Cabriolet licence W 212:

This 1950 356B, licence W21 3610, was nicknamed 'Ferdinand' and was a 75th birthday gift to Ferdinand Porsche in 1950.

The 356 American roadster, a favorite of US service members stationed in Germany:

While its unlikely to be same car, i came across this vintage picture while searching the gallery:

They also included a 356 modified for racing, with wheel covers and rear window vents added to improve on 356's streamlined body.

There was a nice display of the Type 547 Fuhrman-designed Carerra 4 cam engine, one of the most technically demanding designs of its time.

Ferry Porsche with 4 cam engine:

911 Targa - there were many 911's but this was the only one I photographed, as my heart has always been with the 356's:

Finally the VW-Porsche 914:

The day I visited, there was a special presentation of the newly restored Porsche Lohner, the first electric hybrid. The car was front wheel drive via electric motors in each hub, with a gasoline engine used to drive a generator. During the presentation, they started the it up and drove it forward a few feet. There was lots of smoke and an overwhelming smell of gas in the air (although I was not complaining)! After the presentation, the car was mobbed with people. I snuck back in later when the room was empty to take some more pictures.

There was also a nice display of toys:

A friend gave me a bunch of photo's taken during the museum construction, but that will have to wait for another day.

Tell me when you know more about your plans! I live nearby and my garage is only a few kms away so we can meet when you are here!
