Man this sucker is close to getting done. There is just problem after problem with the reinstall of the electrical. Its bad enough I have a nos euro wiper switch with extra wires for intermitent wipers (yes cool if we can work it) but I had some mystery nine post f*(king emergency switch when everyone else is 8.

I had to print out the color version bigger cuz Im going blind Rolling Eyes Now this shit works real well. Wink

Here on the left is my OG switch. On the right - what everyone else got. It takes the power to the ignition. moving through the farking switch first. But the post on my switch is bad and pulls out. Time to reroute.

It certainly looks like an interesting extra terminal, but I don't yet see a problem with using the new switch and wiring terminals according to the USA Bentley wiring diagram for your year. Anybody else?

I also have 2 reds on 30. I was going to put this there to see what happens. Just haven't done it yet.

Well, the easiest method is to (a) take a detailed picture of the switch and wiring (so you can put it back together...), (b) dewire the thing and take it to the bench and (c) use an ohmmeter to find out what terminals the mystery terminal connects to in any given switch position, and see if it makes any sense.

Other than that, if it had no wire on it, don't sweat it. Probably a European option of some kind...

Good move on printing a BIG schematic, by the way. Get it laminated. (Makes an interesting place mat for the table in the bus later.)

Remember, I'm right down the road a bit if you need an assist...

is it a ground to the switch case? That is what the photo looks like. Sometimes if they have a light in them it is needed for it to light up if the switch isn't grounded where it mounts - say it was mounted in plastic or wood then there would be a ground wire for it to work. But if it is mounted into a dash that is grounded it doesn't need a ground wire. Also - if it is a ground and doesn't have a light, Bosch may have been using the same type switch cover / base on lighted and non-lighted switches rather than press different parts.

Nah, the ground is on the side of the case on the left side. Stew says its a jump from the ignition from the ignition switch that gives power to the headlights.

I was in the middle of doing what Telford was sayng - what does the tab do and what does the wire need thats going to it. Then I can reroute as needed to a similar powered post somewhere.

I was more interested in the freak switch. This is a US spec sent to San Antonio through Houston delivered Westfalia. It has the exact same PN as the 8 post. Its just got 9 posts. Confused

Telford Id love to have you over to give it the once over electrically. Stuart and I still need to get the intermittent euro spec wiper switch going. I just scored a cash of NOS relays Id be willing to give you in partial help/payment for checking it out. Wink

Oh I wanted to invite myself over and check out your VW's, trust me. However, we were in town over the weekend for a wedding in Carlsbad. The boss (my gal) only allotted me a few spare hours for VW stuff.

I'll reach out to ya next time for sure. Wink

Telford hooked a brother up! Thanks again for coming out Telford. Cool Many thanks to both him and Stuart for working the widgets. I could have managed, in an ice age, so I'm glad these guys came in and knocked out this fiddly stuff. Electrical works like a champ.

Followup: partial explanation of the 4-way flasher switch mystery terminal:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The terminal is labeled 54f, and connects to terminal 58b (the dash light feeder) when the switch is pressed in, and to nothing when the switch is pulled out. [58b causes the switch lamp to glow slightly when the headlights are on.] So, activating the 4-way flashers kills dash light power to whatever is wired to 54f. What this is good for I have no idea, but I suspect it's a Euro requirement of some kind...

The dimly lit switch when not in use is fully shut off during use and is a normal function to my experience. When your flasher is brightly flashing the “off” part of the flash is FULLY off rather then dimly lit. Rather small potatoes if i had read the diagram properly and hadnt wired it incorrectly when i did it the first time around :opps: glad you got it and crazy great work on the intermittent wipers! I have a bunch of pics to take to update the world that that euro switch DOES have an intermittent function to it and how to so that this isnt the only bus here in the USA with the trick option Wink

Actually, the wiper switch was wired correctly, but there were other wires not connected. We swapped out the switch so I could investigate the weird one.

Note: the delay relay wiring is documented in the type 4 1973 412 "Additional Current Flow" schematic in Technical. Took a while to find that one...]
