Hi All,
I am working on building a Deserter GT and purchased what is supposed to be a running engine. Thought I would replace plug, wires, cap and rotor before trying to start it and found some mouse evidence by the plugs and sure enough the shroud was filled with enough "bedding" to almost fill one side half way up the fan and the other side had a lot in it too. My first question is how clean the cylinder heads have to be to prevent damage? I mean I cleaned out the ribs as best I could but, could not get everything out in the ribs between the cylinders. Does every have to come out? Does anyone know a good trick to cleaning them without disassembling everything? Thanks for the advice
Patrick

I'd just take a strong compressor and blow out what remains with compressed air. Argh, It might smell bad for a bit when it heats up.

Yea - I was going to suggest compressed air too, or a leaf blower! You definitely want to get ALL the nesting materials out of the cylinders and heads. Not likely to blow out from just running the engine, and will certainly restrict air flow.

If using compressed air WEAR A MASK. Mice can carry Hanta virus which can be fatal. It is in their droppings and is spread by breathing it in as dust. Best to use compressed air and a shop vac held close to the air gun. And use a filter in the shop vac.

The cleaner the better. To get rid of mouse smell I use a wash of a 50/50 mix of bleach and water. Soak the area, let it sit 20 minutes and wash it off. CASTROL SUPERCLEAN is good for loosening the stubborn stuff.

Undress it, plug the exhaust and intake ports and take it to the local car wand wash. Bring it home, dress it back up, run it until warm and drop the oil out. Do it all on the same day so no water sits in it.

+1! Don't use air, it will just blow that crap everywhere.

Air will not remove the dried on urine which is where most of the smell comes from and it's a rusting agent.

Patrick, remove all tin, dig it clear and push a hack saw blade into every fin to dig your way clean using a vice grip to hold it and shop vac’d the hell out of it.

And yes, this is the same condition of that 2180 I got from you years ago.
