Starting to round up parts for a tdi conversion in my syncro.

Anyone holding a syncro diesel tank that they would like to sell? Anyone have directions/measurements for reshaping my current tank aside from “one guy does it with a bowing ball?”

How is a syncro diesel tank different from a petrol version?

Guilty as charged.

Current: 1990 Westy Camper - Bostig RG4, 2wd, manual trans w/Peloquin, NAHT high-top, 280 ah LFP battery, 160 watts solar, Flash Silver, seam rust, bondo, etc., etc.
Past: 1985 Westy Camper - 1.9 wbx, 2wd, manual trans, Merian Brown, (sold after 17 years to Northwesty who converted it to a Syncro).

The key difference is the recessed area for the starter is in a very different place since the diesel bell housing places the starter almost centered on top of the tranny while the gas bell housing put it off to the side.

Since the Syncro fuel tank is right above the tranny it needs a recess for the starter in both cases but in different spots.

This is the way the diesel tank is shaped to clear the starter.

Anyone know the depth/width of the indent and location measured from one side or should I start counting pixels?

Wouldn't it be cheaper to use the westy ventures starter adapter and keep the stock tank and bell housing? Possibly use a kep adapter .

Well I'll take your gasser tank if you are selling it.

I have the gas Syncro tank I removed to install a diesel tank. I would be willing to sell the gasser tank. Shipping would be a bit high. PM me an offer.

I got my used Syncro diesel tank from Karl at Westy Ventures. He had a few imported, but I think he found homes for them. Worth checking.

Make sure you're getting a van tank when purchasing one for a diesel Syncro. I've heard there are a few sellers trying to pass off Doka tanks, which don't quite work in the vans.

I know of the concerns with using a DOKA tank (fill the existing filler hole location, different size vent nipple on the top). I have tabs on one of these semi-locally and seems like the best option with the risk of reshaping the tank. The seller has also expressed that he has previously successfully patched the DOKA filler hole using VW HDPE (from a Passat or Jetta tank) and a plastic welder.

I would like to stick to using the diesel starter and the diesel bellhousing and not using an adaptor plate (personal preference, parts on hand).

Collected research:
Reshaping with heat (seems sketchy!):

Machined plugs for doka tank:

http://www.onthebeatentrack.co.uk/fuel-filler-blank-installed/
http://www.onthebeatentrack.co.uk/fuel-breather-pipe-adapter-fabricated/

Seems like the DOKA tank will be my best bet and then re-selling the gasser tank to someone that is collecting parts for a conversion.

This is what I did.

'parts on hand' contains a 215mm clutch and pressure plate designed for less than 100hp.

you really want a KEP adapter and 228mm clutch. maybe a stage2 pressure plate if you plan on further abusing the transaxle with chip tuning.

sell the parts on hand and get on the road w/o a sketchy stretched poly fuel tank. the syncro diesel starter location under the tank sucks more than the oem syncro starter location.

Nah, parts on hand are bellhousing, outputshaft and new diesel starter. I’ll be going with vr6 pressure plate, bigger clutch and custom Malone tune among other things.

I have a subaru conversion using a rmw plate and I’d like to use the diesel bellhousing on this build.

Going to peruse the doka tank with plugged filler location.

Eh? Have you actually ever changed a Syncro diesel starter? WAY far and away easier than a gasser. The whole job is done from the top and so easy!

FWIW, the adaptor setup isn't as strong as a solidly mounted bell housing, doesn't use a 50-degree pan for additional support, and the flywheel lacks the needed weight for a smooth running diesel.

There is no difference in any connection on the tank gas vs diesel. The filler locations are molded into every tank blank and then popped out depending on whether it's going to a truck or van.

TDI flywheel? Then the TDI/VR6 presure plate and disc is fine - but with the add of the larger-spline input shaft, highly recommended.

As long as you can seal the Doka tank fill neck hole and get the new fill hole correct, seems like a good solution. I’m remembering waiting a couple years for one to come along. I had a WTB add running here till Karl reached out to me.

I have a 2nd generation TDI engine in our 2wd camper with a diesel bellhousing. As far as mounting the engine, I don’t see an advantage over a quality adapter plate. I would need a very custom oil pan to take advantage of the diesel bellhousing. I have a torque mount to take some strain off of the bell housing. 1st gen TDI with a diesel oil pan, the diesel bell housing would be the way to go.

FWIW, another samba member tipped me off that he got his diesel syncro fuel tank from a seller on German ebay classifieds. With a little watching and translating a few terms I found a listing with a tank. I'll bet it was the same seller. $265 later and patience with helpful government shutdown-delayed shipping I have a tank. I couldn't be happier. You might explore that option. Or p-mail me and I might be able to dig out contact info on the seller I found.

Got a diesel syncro tank from austria for €130 shipped.

Figured I would document the size and shape of the indent for the starter with the diesel tank next to the gas tank for posterity since no one could answer the same question a few months ago.

Heat and squish away.
