Thanks everyone! We had such a great time yesterday. I really wasn't sure we would even make it. We still need to get the engine to run properly (and many more things...), but we made the 402 mile round trip with no major issues. I think the last time I updated the thread was before I went out of town. When I got back, my WW package was waiting:
Fixed glass seals and turn signal switch:
We put the two windows in, and my son put the rest of the jail bars in Wednesday night.
I finished installing the pillar seat belt mounts too, but had not posted a photo:
I took Thursday and Friday off from work to work on the bus. The door window frames are not from this bus. I will hopefully find some Sigla glass along the way. For now, we have these that were painted red. Acetone treatment:
They both turned out nicely.
Mirror arm acetone treatment:
I took the door off to clean out the door pin holes, then re installed:
Got the back bumper on. It needs some serious help, but will work for now. I did use a chunk of 2X4 to level it out:
Friday I took it down the road for a test drive:
It died on the way home. Luckily I was not far away. From my driveway:
The condenser failed, so I walked home and got what I needed to fix it. No problem. I spent the rest of the day putting the screws in all of the doors, worked on the wiring, replaced the hinges on the temporary deck lid. It was a full day. Saturday was more of the same. Lots of little things, heat, floor mat, rear seat, still trying to get the engine running properly. My father came over and we went for a test drive. We put the seat belts in just in case. At this point I had made 6-8 trips a mile or so down the road trying to get it running smoothly. I finally decided to take it to town for a 20ish mile trip. I got to the boat landing 7 miles away, and stopped to check the timing and tweak the carb. It died and I could not get it to restart. I thought I ran out of fuel (I am planning to hook up the gauge soon...) I had a gas can and was getting ready to start walking when a taxi pulled into the boat landing turnaround. Lucky me. He was looking for some guy but said he would give me a ride. I got a ride home and got my truck in case I couldn't get it running. Long story short, it was the fuel pump, so I drove home and thought maybe I had a usable one:
Nope. I knew I had a pump rebuild kit, so:
Here was where I broke down at the boat landing:
I got it running and drove it home. It still did not run right, so I decided to rebuild the carb. (the plan was to leave early the next morning for the dust off, and we still had only put less than 20 miles on it. I dismantled a carb Saturday night, and put it in the dip tank.
Started early Sunday:
I got it running acceptably, but not great, and decided to see what would happen. Lets go!
Chilly start:
We made it past the boat landing:
We stopped at the gas station. I went inside to pay, and this guy in front of me in line asked "Is that your bus"
"Yes"
"Want to sell it, I'll give you 10 grand for it right now"
I swear this happened. He broke out a huge knot of bills. I asked if I could take a picture, and he said "sure" 6AM on a Sunday morning at a convenience store in rural Maine. Anyhow... I told him sorry, no.
He went outside, and I paid for the gas. When I was pumping gas, a taxi (Not the same one from the day before) drove by. The 10K guy was in the passenger seat and gave me a thumbs up. Woah!
We made it to the interstate:
Portland. The big city!
Fort Foster, Kittery, Maine. 201 miles from home!
I could not believe we made it! It was such a great time. We saw Lots of friends, and we met a bunch of good people too!
These guys! Those who know, know:
J.Ps awesome road warrior behind the bus:
We got there at 11 (5 hour trip down) and hung out until 3:30ish. What a day. We caught up to Charlie Jordan and Mel on the highway headed home:
Slight heat duct issue. This was temporary, but I was hoping temporary would last a little longer:
My son was sleeping part of the way back. When he woke up, he started looking at my photos. He saw this one and asked why I took it:
This was the first (and only) car I passed! HA!
We got home at 8PM
I still can't believe we drove it!
Unreal! Still a lot to do, and a long way to go! |

Just some before and after awesomeness:
Thankfully, our photography skills have improved along with the condition of the bus
Also, we're looking for two more 15 inch beauty rings for the bus. If anyone has two that they'd let go of for at least somewhat cheap, let us know! |

Epic post and phenomenal save of this long dead bus. As a father, I think the best part is the time you're spending with you son working on it.
Well done! _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Who the heck is walking around with $10K on them and flashes it?
So weird... |
It was crazy! We were right in line in the store when he broke out the cash. No one acted like it was a big deal. The guy was not quiet or bashful with his wad of dough either. Very strange!

Wow. I haven't made the first pass yet... Almost did one day but chickened out. Haha
How was it on the road? We found 95kpm (just under 60 mph) was a comfortable top speed. |
The speed limit was 60, and he that car was probably going 50. Easy pass.
We cruised between 55-60 with no issue. I didn't want to go any faster, but could have. It handled really well. I was surprised. I was worried that it would crab walk, or shake since we repaired and replaced the bent frame, and did our own alignment. It went great down the road. It felt more stable than the bay window. I am guessing that the tires help a lot. |
