My bug has a leak from 3 small holes in the side of the case. I don't have a parts manual - are there some plugs that are supposed to be here? Pic of a random gearbox for location.

them holes are plugged and should not leak, they may have come loose, and/or you may have a blocked breather which causes the case to pressurize and hence leak. Check that the breather hole is clean, you can fish a steel wire thru the hole to clear it, confirm it is clear. the breather hole is on the upper end of the nose cone. With a clogged breather, the tranny will usually develop a leak someplace. With a swing axle the leak may even manifest itself on the wheel bearing seal, which can ruin the brakes!

so check the breather hole.

if the plugs are tight, but seep dispite the breather being open, then some sealer can be tried over the plugs as a repair in-situ. But to be effective, the breather must be clear to prevent pressurization

Its a 1960 Deluxe imported from Portugal. Virtually rust free and not used since the 90's. Only 15,500km on the clock!

Good idea to check that. I recently had to replace leaking rear wheel seals. Never thought of that as a possible reason for the problem. This breather hole is on the top of the nose cone where it bolts to the transmission? Any hints on how to access this? Looks to be an awkward place to work.

Not really easy to get to unless you have a rail buggy. Pretty much the only way you'll get to it is from under the car. If the vent is plugged you'll most likely also have gear oil getting blown out around the hockey stick near your shift coupler.

Nice Bug, thanks for posting, my 61 is that color too.

The vent hole can be got at with a bent steel wire from under the car. they can clog up with mud.

Glad you found the problem.

See the technical tab section for owners manuals, wire diagrams, color combos, period accessories and such. Samba is a good resource for Bugs!

does your interior include a turquoise floor matt, passenger grab handle, shifter boot, and darker green steering wheel? You have the colored running boards. The Turquoise Bug were offered for a while with some cool interior colors.

The wheel rims I think should be two tone shades of green, at least the US spec 61 is.

Oh one more thing and this is VERY Important. See link below on engine fires and safety wire! Even a low mile Bug can suffer from the fire hazard. You NEED to address this fire hazard as shown in the link. It only takes a few minutes and less than a dollar of materials, and can save you from a total fire loss.

Bug On!, Fire Safe of Course!

Yes, all of the above. The door panels also still have the plastic protective covers on them. I found the original paint on the wheels under the silver but have painted them body colour for now.
