I picked up a nice old VW photo album recently, it has some cool old factory photos in it, here is a sample of some of the photos in it, sorry if these have been posted before.

I am curious about the apparatus, including what is in his right hand. There appears to be movement, perhaps a flywheel of some kind in the "front" of the engine, too. Any ideas?

Forgive my ignorance but is that a manual thermostat handle on the shroud? _________________ Aust. RHD 66 Type 1

Yes, it's a lifting rig.
It was discussed at length in the bus forum years ago, it hooks in the hole on top seam of the case between the flywheel flange and shroud and the part in his hand rests against the back face of the shroud. Once you know what to look for you'll see them in use in many factory photos throughout the aircooled era. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

yes it is, with markings for summer and below freezing (winter), used until replaced with the automatic system in may 1950. _________________ "we're here on Earth to fart around" kurt vonnegut

Just what I need. Where can I order one of these body shells from? Bearing in mind that Mika hasn't started producing them yet! |

Manual system removed in early March 1949 (Was in use between late 1947 to March 49) , then the automatic thermostat system taken in use in May 1950. That must be result of too many overheated engines with the manual system, they had to remove it, and it took over a year to get the thermostat in use. _________________ Mika

First pic of this very topic. Very interesting to see a wiper blade on that Porsche rear window. But wait, look at that sweat heart in the back ground. Never mentioned.
