Hey- Sorry for the slow reply... I've had a couple other projects and at the same time am going through a big house remodel. The bus is pretty much ready for paint, I just don't have the focus for it right now, or a safe place to keep once in paint. Hope to get through the house project soon and start to get some of the household stuff out of the shop. Then off to paint. Thanks for checking in. _________________ David S |

The house is going slow but getting there. I've also been finishing up a beetle restoration. The bus has been waiting patiently and hope to be getting back to it soon...

Finally, I'm getting back on this bus and picking up where I left off...
For now we're running the later trans that was in it. I dropped it off at Arizona Transaxle for a refresh and got it back and installed. Brakes are pretty much back together. I also ran the new harness while I was under there. I wanted to be sure there were no problems getting it through before paint...
I still had to do a final block sanding and re-prime of the decklid and apron...
I had done a rough fit and repair of front bumper/body trim and dropped them off at Metro Plating in Mesa for polish...

Thanks! Yes, getting close to paint.
Something that has been bugging me is the decklid gap. The left side is good, but the right side gets larger at the bottom. The decklid is square and measures evenly, but the opening is about an 1/8" larger at the bottom. I don't believe there was ever enough damage to the bus to do this and it's just one of the irregularities in these early buses. I noticed this earlier and thought it was within reason, but now feel it's something that has to be addressed. While I want to retain some of the unrefined details and crudeness these early buses have, it didn't seem right to leave it. So I made a cut, moved the jamb over and welded it up.
I still had some work to do in the engine compartment also...
The bus is back on the ground now. I fit and drilled holes for the cargo door trim and vent trim...

Hello David
Very very nice work.
Could you do me a favor and send me the measures of the holes for the vent wing trim?
Thank you
Greetings

Do you mean the engine vent trim? I used a 7/64" sae drill bit which seemed to match the original holes. Looks like 7/64 translates to 2.778mm. _________________ David S |

I dropped off handles and trim for chrome and polish. Then on to a lot of wet sanding...
Matt Howard and the crew at Deluxe Customs will be taking care of the paint. We've done a few Sealing Wax Red buses together over the years and his ProSpray formula has always been good. He ordered in enough toner to make a gallon and did a spray out to make sure the colors hadn't changed, and was still a match to the small amount he supplied back when I did the undercarriage. Looks good.

Thanks Todd, John, dj!
It may not be perfect, but we made a decision first to try to save all the original trim since we had it. The bumper and rear body trim are original to the bus also and I picked them up when I dropped off the belt line trim. I haven't unwrapped it yet, but looks good so far.
I keep track of hours and bill at the end of the month, so if I got all the paperwork together I guess I could add up the total hours. I don't think Dick or I want to know. I'm at close to 70 hours just mostly wet sanding in the last few weeks. Seems like I used to wet sand a bus in a few days. I like to think I'm getting better, but maybe just getting old.
Here's a peek at the trim...
