Not sure if this is relevant. In WI there are many county forests that allow full off grid camping for free or a very small yearly pass.
The rules are generally pretty simple for the full dispersed camping forests.
* 14 day max stay
* Don't block a road or gate
* Pack out what you brought in (take your trash with you.)
* Obey all county hunting, fishing and wildlife regulations. (don't hunt or fish out of season.)
* Pay the advanced camping fee and register with the county forest office (via mail,) or purchase the yearly county pass in advance of your stay if required.
Since these are all managed on a county by county basis the rules are a little different for each. Several counties have no fee, or notification regulations. Other counties have a $20 yearly pass but no notification, and yet others will have designated sites within the forest that you have to rent for like $15 a night, but they're about a mile or more apart and usually have a fire ring in them. And of course there are established county campgrounds that will have leveled pads, pit toilets and a pump for water, but no electric or water hookup.
This is the website for all many of the counties that offer camping.
https://www.wisconsincountyforests.com/forest-resources/map-of-wcfa-counties/
You have to go to each county to get the info that is relevant to each. You have to insure you're staying on COUNTY forest land (not state or federal.) Totally worth it when you can find a small private lake on a fairly well maintained forest road that you have all to yourself for a weekend. _________________ Current: '87 Westfalia | '16 Audi Q5 3.0T S-Line w/sport package.

That is good to know. We've had luck with dispersed camping in National Forests around here. No county forests that I know of, but a few state ones and camping in those is not generally encouraged. _________________ '87 Westy in Wolfram Grey Metallic |
