That last picture, showing the 5-way connector with several red wires going to it looks just like a GoWesty AUX battery installation.
Hmm... |
I asked the previous owner if there’s a spare battery, they said no. Several things are now pointing me to it. Next time I’m going to check under the driver’s seat and find out - if there’s an aux battery that would explain soooooo much! Would make no sense why the previous owner would not know anything about it though, although it could be that they never checked and the owner before that installed it... |

There might not be one now but the wiring might have been…adjusted…to accommodate one. Could be under the driver's seat or the bench or in a cabinet but I assume you would have found it by now. I suspect you might just find some empty terminals… _________________ Currently -> Frida: 87 Tizian Red (mostly) Vanagon GL Westfalia w/ 2.0L ABA conversion

The only place I haven’t looked yet is under driver seat. And the only item I’ve found so far that would have extra wiring would be an extra switch on the dash for the radiator fan. Other than that I don’t know what else the extra wiring would be for. I’ll check and report back. |

YOU. ALL. ROCK!!! The PO assured me there was no aux battery. I pushed the driver seat forward, look under, gowesty setup with battery, exactly as the install video describes. Main cable, open up the fuse holder, blown fuse. Changed fuse, now hazards, radio and lighter all work perfectly.
Not only am I delighted cause everything now works and I feel vindicated cause the fuse situation without this new development didn’t make sense, but adding an aux battery was extremely high on my list of mods to do in the next couple of months. I’m blown away!!!
Thank you all!!

Good news.
Interesting that your PO didn't know about it…the incuriosity of people can be surprising.
The GW charging setup is pretty weak and will kill as many aux batteries as you care to buy. But that's for another day. If it works for now, roll with it, and you can think on the replacement, if you want one, later. _________________ Currently -> Frida: 87 Tizian Red (mostly) Vanagon GL Westfalia w/ 2.0L ABA conversion

I have no dog in this fight... what is weak about the GW Aux set-up?

It’s been working fine for me for a couple of years, but the weaknesses are summarized in my mind as follows:
- Its 20th century tech when there are much better 21st century options.
- the wiring gauge is reported as being undersized for the charging load.
- it uses line taps.
- the battery and charging system is too small for extended modern load demands , like a laptop or 12v fridge.
But like I said it works fine for me 3 nighters of running a fan, using interior lights sparingly, and charging a couple phones being my expectations.
OP glad it was simple! _________________ 1991 Vanagon GL 2.1 AT Westfauxlia. "Frankie" Totaled https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=764510&highlight=carnage

Geez,
Maybe I should look under my driver's seat. Who knows what might be there.
To the OP, glad you found the blown fuse culprit. _________________ '90 Westy / automatic.

Now rip out all that grade school wiring and start again before it catches fire,
Scaled back so you don’t know how I really feel about it. _________________ .ssS! |
