So tried to replace the dangling map light with a USB outlet. The light was working before, but was killed in the process. No power. BUT everything else works, cig lighter, stereo, lights, though the stereo is aftermarket with the toggle kill switch to prevent battery drain.
Been searching old threads, the Bentley, Haynes, for clues, but can’t figure out why only the map light is dead. It’s a 1985, so it’s not the #3 fuse. #8? #9?
Where am I supposed to be looking? _________________ 1985 Tintop 4 sp GW 2.3 “Connie”

Correct. Apparently it’s easy to short it when it’s flapping and flopping around. It worked before, but now it’s dead, yet nothing else is affected. It’s an early model so the chorus of #3 fuse! everyone told me doesn’t apply. _________________ 1985 Tintop 4 sp GW 2.3 “Connie”

Simple. Lift up the teak top and look inside. Probably a failed wire at the spade terminals. Smart alec aside, it most likely is the terminals. If you remove the glove box, you can reach up underneath as the wires are none too long. Perhaps you can pull them down and both examine the terminals and or check for power. Could very likely be a ground issue.

Fixed it. Traced the wiring for a ways and found that the ground wire was cut. Apparently the light grounded well enough on the metal of the glove box, but that didn’t work when the outlet was used. Attached the ground wire of the outlet to a metal screw, now I’m in business. On to replacing the lighter with a real 12V socket. _________________ 1985 Tintop 4 sp GW 2.3 “Connie”
